I have a component cable, and if I'm not mistaken the video quality is better. I'm not even sure you can use progressive mode (when it's available) with S-Video. I might be wrong, though.

That said, I have a question - do you have an S-Video cable for your PS2? I've always wondered how big the difference is between component and S-Video.
There is a noticable difference between S-Video (Separated-Video) and Component Video [Y - Pb - Pr; red-green-blue], for a start S-Video only does Standard Def 720*480i where as Component Video will do Hi def all the way upto 1920*1080i.

Complicated setup Thirith.
Why have a DVD player when you have the PS3? I have a Bravia TV 1080p 40" with built in Freeview and the PS3 only. I'd like to get some 5.1 surround speakers for this set up too, but I've no idea what to get.

I haven't (yet) looked into whether the PS3 can be made region-free for DVDs, added to which the thing's strangely loud. If I can make it DVD region-free and figure out how to make it less loud, I wager I'll get rid of my DVD player.

There's a lot of contradictory information about region-freeing a PS3 for DVDs, so I'm not sure whether you can do that or not. I do know that it's impossible at the current time to unlock it for Blu-Rays, as the Blu-Ray copy protection is woven too much into the OS (?).
However, if you have actually bought a DVD, you could always use something like Slysoft AnyDVD to rip it into a Region-0 version and play that?

With a DVD library of 500+, roughly 2/3 of which are R2, that's not really something I'd consider, I'm afraid. :)

That's why I have 4 DVD-burners :p

Biker - I just want a simple set-up. I've thought of getting one of the Sony speaker sets and I don't want a whacking great amp if I can avoid it.
