I don't know where you get that "stupid westerners" condescending BS from.
Are you serious?

With
japanese comics my interest came back because they had stories and themes not aimed solely at children. Which I wasn't anymore. And the drawing style was so much more sophisticated.

Great, an
american cartoonist managed to do the same in a limited way.

And
I basically dislike american and most european style comics. The drawings are so clumsy once you read into some good mangas.

But take a look at Hobbes' tail: See how the stripes go over the tail and into the sky? Is that artsy or plain sloppy? See how the outline on his ass gets much fatter all of a sudden? You may say that's a shadow, but if you ever draw you will realise what a convenient way that is for correcting a shape that didn't come out right from the start. And Calvin's face is just two dots and two curved lines.
I know it's a different style. You can call it more abstract, I call it less detailed. In the end it's a question of how much effort and skill the artist put into the picture. I know I could paint that C&H picture. But there are many mangaka whose style I could never copy even if tried for years.
This really is a style thing. Watterson proves many times over in his work that he can draw with hyper-realism and such, but generally it's not in the style of the comic. The comic is loose and relaxed and doesn't take itself super seriously. But at the same time he goes out of his way to critique the entire art field. I give you this:

http://www2.ivcc.edu/rambo/eng1001/CopyofMunchScream.jpgIs this a photorealistic picture? No.
Is this a picture without errors? No.
Is this picture highly regarded in the visual art field?
Yes.
The point is that this picture, as well as Watterson's work, attempt to capture a feeling. And disregarding Calvin & Hobbes just because it doesn't conform to your oval-eyed, big-tittied manga style:

I don't draw, Kolya, but that doesn't change the fact that Calvin and Hobbes is the most aesthetically pleasing newspaper strip ever created. Bill Watterson's illustrations breathe.
Why not post some examples of your mangaka and we can make inappropriate comparisons!

I'm always serious. Love Hina! Whoohoo!
Oh and thanks for posting The Scream, I had never seen it before. You're one of those people who assume the other person is stupid because he doesn't agree with your tastes, right? We'll have a big time my friend.
Schattentänzer, I know Nihei did the Wolverine story. Is it ironic, that he likes it and I don't? You're right though, that Nihei isn't a good writer. It didn't matter with Blame!. But it started to show when he tried to make something different afterwards.
The Arkham Asylum pics look interesting, miles better than the usual superhero stuff. They actually have lighting in them.

Edit: Also raevol, you're doing the same thing as Kolya. As much as there are a few decently drawn western comics, there are also decently drawn eastern ones.
True. I guess I just figure that with the criticisms he has of C&H that he doesn't understand art practice. I'll back off a bit.

I don't think you're stupid because you don't agree with me, I think you're stupid because you're criticizing Calvin & Hobbes for things that are completely untrue. I don't expect you to repent of your sins and become a C&H fanboy, I just don't understand how you can attack the art style and storytelling of one of the most highly regarded newspaper comics ever.
