ZymeAddict: "Manga style" is not a plus. There are tons of shitty mangas. But a few are better than everything else in the field.
van HellSing, Nihei studied architecture and I imagine that had some influence as well. Anyway, I'm not after mangas for manga's sake, but at some point in my childhood I stopped reading comics (Asterix, Isnogud, Mortadelo y Filemón, etc.) because I was bored with them. With japanese comics my interest came back because they had stories and themes not aimed solely at children. Which I wasn't anymore. And the drawing style was so much more sophisticated.

Kolya, sorry, but you're not making any sense. Just as manga doesn't consist solely of Pokemon, european comics doesn't consist solely of Asterix (note: I'm not comparing here, I actually enjoy Asterix to this day).

Yeah well, I read a few french comics but all in all they're overly costly, too short and often exerted artsy. Not as bad as Marvel, DC, etc. though.

my taste in comics. And no marvel or dc comic I ever saw fit in there. I don't know where you get that "stupid westerners" condescending BS from.
Aja: I like that picture, it has pretty colors. But take a look at Hobbes' tail: See how the stripes go over the tail and into the sky? Is that artsy or plain sloppy? See how the outline on his ass gets much fatter all of a sudden? You may say that's a shadow, but if you ever draw you will realise what a convenient way that is for correcting a shape that didn't come out right from the start. And Calvin's face is just two dots and two curved lines.
I know it's a different style. You can call it more abstract, I call it less detailed. In the end it's a question of how much effort and skill the artist put into the picture. I know I could paint that C&H picture. But there are many mangaka whose style I could never copy even if tried for years.
