But it does throw the quality of your tastes into question here.
I'm curious about how, with all this latent hate for the comic, he was the first to get the reference.

Google. And I basically dislike american and most european style comics. The drawings are so clumsy once you read into some good mangas. Most of the time the characters and settings repeat and all you get is a new balloon. Heck, even the story is often the same. I prefer my comics to be visually appealing as well as entertaining.
Edit: Oh and no speaking animals whatsoever. Please.

You link to a wikipedia text to prove that Calvin and Hobbes are visually appealing and not text-driven?
It's nice that he changed the static panel format, but yeh, that's been done elsewhere for god knows how long. Great, an american cartoonist managed to do the same in a limited way.

Thanks for taking the time to spell my name correctly. But are you sure, you know what Angst means?

If you are comparing newspaper comic strips to Japanese manga, I think you're rather missing the point of the former.
It's kind of like saying "I hate all television shows. Compared to films, they are totally simplistic and have cheap production values."
As for "visual appeal", to tell you the truth, since everyone and his mom is drawing in Manga style now, I don't really see how that is inherently a plus.
