Either way. I dont mean to sound like I think America is a benovolant benefactor, but also it seems odd to get the feeling that alot of people think 'we'll take your money but we will still be pissed about it'.

It's more about them being pissed where it's being spent instead of them. The question is not "do we have the money" it's "where do we put the enormous sums of money that we have". When they decide "killing people" instead of "helping people", you can only expect that there will be a bit of controversy.

Except I'm sure that Bush and company would be much happier if nobody was killed, Aero. They want everyone to vote and accept majority rule so that business can be done in the sort of civilized fashion where we (by we I mean the ultrarich of us) come out on top and they don't fare so badly either (fine points aside). Unfortunately every faction hates every other to the point only rubble can be produced without an iron hand dictator. For help we have Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Al Queda. In this situation only bodies can be produced with or without us.
Meanwhile we are killing those who care so much for the rest of us that they would and do die for us. Lovely. Fuck sending more. I would rather every penny I make get sent to Africa than another nieghbor die and get called a brown shirt by internet know it alls.
It's also quite wonderful that self rightious assholes would rather see people die of a horrible disease than use a rubber. My sympathy on your difficulty Shayde. It must be like trying to scrub the wet off water with an ice cube.
And sorry for being emo, I do support your cause. You are doing good with what you have and want more to do more good. Who could argue with that?

Shayde, correct me if I'm wrong, but you can walk into most African grocers and find Coke, Twinkies, and every other 'western' manufactured/owned product, but very little local merchandise. The West has not played fair at all when it comes to trade...
This rings generally true but I can only 100% confirm it for SADC countries e.g. Mocambique, Namibia and Zim 10 years ago, I can confirm for Kenya and Tanzania. Though South Africa is quite developed and you will find a lot of "Proudly South African" branded products here as well.

I can understand why you would see it that way, America does get a lot of bad press. But surely you can understand why some people would be upset about the associated issues of aid? debt conditionality, structural ajustment policies, agricultural subsidies etc?

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to write an interesting HIV & AIDS educational drama without being able to say "condom" or "safe sex"?
"Abstain kids... no really... please stop laughing."

Bush's promises for a balanced budget in 2010 are based entirely on the premise that somebody other than him is going to end the Iraq war immediately after his terms ends.
why shouldn't they be? congress sure as hell isn't gonna do it so I guess the baton has once again, been passed on shortly after an election based on lies

Only because they've been high for years.
congress or the gas prices? thats my point, they have been high for years but I don't understand why everyone is so upset with the economy, it's like bitch when they're raised and bitch when they're lowered, either way it's Bush's fault, same goes for the taxes

Ummm...it's only January. Stopping a war isn't like flipping the off switch on your TV.
Quote:
They have no direct authority to do so; they can't force the president to, say, follow the ISG. At most they can cut funding.
yeah, thats why 20,000 troops were just sent to the middle east, right guys?! I mean, it's not like we can just pull out immediatly, we have provide funding for MORE troops first:weird:, oh but elect me guys! my first priority is to bring our boys home!
Quote:
a)We've committed so much already they cant STAND the thought of pulling out totally. If we pulled out totally, it would destroy the entire country so like it or not we have to see this through to some extent.
b)The Congress only controls the purse strings. The president and the secretary of defense control how the war is executed. If the congress start cutting funding, the republicans and the president will claim they are anti-the troops, as that is who will most likely suffer (or at least thats what they will say), so cutting funding isn't a viable solution.
so for the sake of being politically correct...let us completly ignore our pre-election promises and pledges, and allow our boys to continue to die every day.....right, but hey, keep on rockin in the free world....while we still have it that is.... Last time I ever fucking vote.

Chin up, Johnny. If at first you don't get what you want, vote, vote and vote again.
Don't forget to bring one of these:
