hi everyone, newby here.. I've played Morrowind once just as a fighter (didn't finish though coz my computer died on me) but have started again as a thief - but I don't know how to use any of the thieving skills?!
When I sneak everyone can see me! And can someone tell me exactly how to pick people's pockets? Like the exact keys to press?!
Thanks :thumb: love the game...

Press the sneaksie button (usually CTRL) will perform all of those actions for you.
However, sneaksie skills tend to suck at lower levels.

What´s your sneak skill at? Also, if you want too be a sucessfull thief you´ll need some points in security.
Here is how it works:
Sneak helps you remain unnoticed. If your sneak skill is high enough you can acsses peoples pockets by using them. Be warned though, if the catch you, the´ll be royal pissed of.
Security is used for lockpicking and trap disarming. But you´ll need some specific tools for this. Namley a lockpick and a probe. (no, not an anal probe.) Curse my dirty mind.

I'm fairly sure that security is also pickpocketing. I'd see about getting a ring or something enchanted with fortify luck.

You can tell if you are hidden because an Icon appears on the screen when you are successful.

You'll know you're sneaking when the little gold icon of a hand reaching for a ring appears. However, sneaking means you aren't being noticed, it's not a guarantee of successful thievery. Trying to steal an item or pickpocket someone will still have its success measured against your skill, although sneaking improves your chances.

also, forgive me if i'm wrong, but chamelion spell works to fortify sneak quite alot when used... not sure exactly how, but it just does.
There is a really good amulet that gives you 80% chamelion for 60 seconds on self, its sub-quest related on the path between Gnisis and Ald Velothi.
But if what you say is true, and you are playing a thief, you probably have sneak as a major/minor skill so it wont be too hard for you to work up.

No, chameleon doesn't fortify sneak at all. It does help you snatch things though, as it makes you more difficult to see. Powerful chameleon + decent sneak means you can get away with quite a bit...

I did not mean DIRECTLY fortify, but the outcome is the same.. like how luck fortifies marksman (or just about any other skill)
I have played around with this alot, usually to level up sneak a few times in order to get a 5x multipler for Agility. Anyway, I found that at around level 10 in sneak, I had about a 5% chance of sneaking when behind Karlitha in Balmoora, meaning the sneak icon would flash/flicker for about one second for every twenty (meaning I was outright failing for the other 19 seconds) so It was virtually imposable to level up sneak by doing this. However, while chamelion 80% was active, sneak would work about 90% of the time, meaning on average only one second to the ten would resualt in failed sneak mode.
So yeah, chameleon DOES greatly increase the success of staying in sneak mode. AFAIK morroind does a huge series of rolls, comparing lighting/shadow, NPC perception, sneak skill, agility, luck etc to determine the success of a proposed sneak. These rolls are continually active, which would explain the flickering sneak mode at lower levels. I guess chameleon just greatly tilts a lot of the rolls in your favor, explaining the apparent 'fortified sneak' I mentioned earlier. While technically not fortified sneak, it works out the same, if you get me.

Yeah, I understand your meaning. You're absolutely right.

As far as I understand it, lighting and shadow don't affect sneak at all in default Morrowind. The engine isn't capable of that, but some mods go towards rectifying this.
NPC perception is probably happening, but I'm not sure what determines it. Probably a mix of attributes, like maybe luck or intelligence or something. As you said, their own sneak skill and agility may have a hand in it. Hard to say...
As it is, sneak is rather useless in Morrowind. Picking pockets doesn't offer much in the way of compensation for your efforts (from what I've seen) and for moving unnoticed it is simpler to just get some decent chameleon effect (40% and up) through items like the Amulet of Shadows and the like. NPCs don't see you and even a minor amount of sneak skill in league with some good chameleon lets you get away with a lot of things.
Frankly, the thief aspect of Morrowind is pretty lacking. Seems that Oblivion will really improve on this, so we'll have to see how that works.
