If you want the cake analogy to be correct and not horribly biased, here's how it goes:
A few years ago, someone baked a cake, made from very specific ingredients. It was quite a hit, all gourmets and food critics were all over it while the general public acknowledged its existence but never really ate it en-masse because its taste wasn't quite usual.
However, some people actually loved it so much that they created an appreciation society for that particular cake. The original pastry chef later baked a variation on the first cake, which was also extremely good and appreciated by all.
Cue years after the original chef retired. A new chef (who only worked in an industrial bakery before, a bakery where several other chefs started on their recipes and left without a reason) says he's bringing back the cake that became so famous, to the party.
The naysayers (appreciation society and critics) "freak out" and say it doesn't bode well because the original bakery wasn't industrial. You say "whatever."
The chef then says that he has removed or severely reduced use of certain original ingredients.
The naysayers use this as further fuel to "freak out" and say the new taste will hardly make it similar to the original cake. You say "whatever."
He then says he baked it to incorporate ingredients that never were in the original recipe so that the general public, the one that didn't like the cake years ago, can enjoy it this time.
The naysayers say that "Those ingredients were never in that cake! It will deviate a lot from the original taste". You say "whatever."
The man finally says that the new cake only uses the same sponge base but the filling is entirely different.
Everyone says "uh, what? this sounds terrible".
You might have been unjustly accused of having a knee-jerk reaction when you finally formulated criticism, but you yourself have been accusing everyone and their dogs of being knee-jerk reactionaries when they were mostly right all along.

Except the original cake sold quite well. And the new cake could still be a perfectly respectable, but different, cake yet.

Actually, I quite like this cake analogy. :p I'll be delighted if Thief 4 turns out to be like cake.
I mean, can you guys remember ever eating bad cake?
And since we're talking about cakes, here's a cool song that fits the theme:

@jay: Sure. Yet the analogy holds, and it also shows at what point some naysayers might have gone too far (dismissing the new product because of its ingredients while it might be perfectly acceptable, though industrial), although they were perfectly justified in attacking it on its differences.
Incidentally I just made a chocolate cake. It's in the oven and's gonna be delicious.

I'm pretty sure whoever does the most namecalling wins. At least, that's what I remember from kindergarten.

It's not a personality test you idiot, it's an example of what you are doing.
Numbskull.
How does anyone take you seriously? Slow your roll, your frothiness is showing.
As far as the story is concerned, I don't even know how to interpret what EM is saying on getting inspiration from their animations. Has it been revealed if they are going to use a similar format for the cutscenes?
With the information we have, the story seems generic and not terribly interesting. A city affected by plague, class divide, yeah, already got this story in Dishonored. It seems about the only defining similarity of EM's "cake" to the previous thief "cakes" we all love, is that they both use flour.

Let's lighten up on the bickering and get back to arguing points on the topic, shall we.
(Edit: Said before I saw Shinrazero's edit FWIW.)
