I wish we had an upvote button around here. I'd give you a million +1s.

Ok, moving swiftly on from the important business of cake ingredients and who is an imbecile and who isn't, and back to stories and animations \o/
Can't say I'm worried that the story guys and the animation guys have been hanging out with each other. just as long as mocapping quick time events isn't the most important thing in your development process ~ oh wait. That aside, characterisation via movement & animation seems like a noble enough goal. Though given the mincey way Nu Garrett closed doors in the E3 demo (ooh, get away you rough brute *push*) we'll have to wait and see whether it's been a success.
Other things bug me though.
I'm not a fan of NuGarrett being a cloathes hanger for the new bat suit and bow. I think you could argue that Garrett dressed in some curious garments and might have had some nifty tech in the older games, but they didn't make a big deal of it. It was basically left to the player's imagination to fill in the gaps - maybe Garrett was obsessive about his tools, maybe he wasn't - it was up to the player - and I think this is a smart way to do characterization in a story. The nu way seems to be for developers to do all the work using awesome hollywood style tech to add all the details while players are relegated to passive consumers, I think that's a mistake.
Someone reported that one of Nu Garrett's throw away quips at E3 was to comment how the Guards got to eat well in their mess hall while they prosecute starving citizens for protesting. So it's looking like any layered nuance is gone - Guards being clumsily dehumanized as monsters, not average Jo's just trying to hold down a job that lets them look after themselves and their family that happens to put them in conflict with other regular folks etc etc.
They're little things and I might be a grump. But can't say I'm excited/intrigued so far.

You find it
straightforward?? I can see making the case that I'm interpreting it too negatively, but I can't see how you could say the answer is anything other than a garbled mess of abstractions. It's word salad.
Let me put that another way. I find his answer perfectly
understandable. I would agree that his answer is not very
satisfactory. I would agree that he meanders around and uses a lot of words to say not very much. The answer is vague, and uninteresting, and does not reveal much. But it is not cryptic.
Which leads me on to ...

The interview seemed kind of rehearsed. Or that guy is just really lousy at asking questions.
Well, it's an "interview" with their PR man, so ... yeah. I remember them saying at E3 that they were going to respond to requests for more involvement with the community. I am guessing that they're not actually ready to release any new info yet, so we get these vague and unsatisfying interviews in which nothing of importance gets revealed.

Could be true. The positive interpretation would be that this is the Baron's manor, which a mob is currently trying to storm due to poor living conditions. If it was ever appropriate to make such a quip in a thief game, this would be the level to do it in.

You're doing exactly what I was saying jay. Your lack of self awareness is blinding.
jay pettitt on 29/6/2013 at 13:17
err, actually I am aware that my views are coloured by the fact that I'm a grump and that I'm prone to picking up things that reinforce that view, which might mean reading too much into small things. Which is why I ended that post with a caveat.
I've yet to see you do the same though.
jay pettitt on 29/6/2013 at 13:34
Actually, scratch that. Let's make it simple.
Coming from a geezer who's just invented his own personality test, which amazingly passes only his self and declares everyone else to be intellectually deficient, accusing anyone else of showing a lack of self awareness is, well, it's ironic.
You had your ideas about what you wanted to see from T4 - more of a stealthy assassin game to appeal to a larger audience, but that still supported traditional thief gameplay. We can have a long chat about that, but whatever.
I had my ideas about what I'd like to see - a traditional Thiefy game world dripping in atmosphere with beefed up exploration mechanics.
T4 looked wanting compared to my list of wants before it looked wanting compared to yours. It's got nadda to do with you being the smartest boy on the internet if only everyone else could see it.
SubJeff on 29/6/2013 at 14:52
It's not a personality test you idiot, it's an example of what you are doing.
Numbskull.
jay pettitt on 29/6/2013 at 15:17
It's an arbitrary list of stuff you made up to produce the result you want - other people are stupid, Subjeff is smart. Seriously, get over yourself. You're not doing science here any more than anyone else. But you are being more of a jerk.
If you think the story is looking good, say so. Tell us why.
Ranting about how you think everyone with a different view is stupid isn't interesting.
