Cool! I was eager to hear some details about the story.

Then I started listening.
Adam: "When you guys sat down to put pen to paper, what were your original inspirations?"
Gallager: "The biggest inspiration was...the animation side."
Huh? Yeah, that seems like a great inspiration for a story...animations.
Adam: "What are fans of the classic Thief games going to love about the story?"
Gallager: "You don't need to have played the old games to enjoy the new story of Thief.... They're separate stories."
Translation: There's nothing special for fans in the story.
Adam: "Will we see any reference to the original factions...?"
Gallager: "If you explore, you know, maybe you'll find some things, which...if you know what you're looking for....you'll be like, wait a minute, that's kind of interesting."
Translation: We tucked some things in out of the way places that fans might recognize, but they have no impact on anything.

Why do I have to roll my eyes every time you guys interpret a source?
Full quote regarding animations:
Quote Posted by Steven Gallagher
When you have a character as complex as Garrett, finding a position to put him in, and seeing how he can react to that was the biggist inspiration. At the begnning of the project I spent a lot of time involved with the animation side, so kind of thinking about how Garrett would perform, how he would act, how he would think. The "what would Garrett do" mantra became really useful. If you think about Garrett and who he is, he ... [description of Garrett's history and how that reflects on his personality, desire for independence, etc]
What does this tell us?
1) Gallagher worked with animation team first, obviously they wanted to get that up and running.
2) When he tried to determine how Garrett would act, he doesn't mention any outside influences on that role, just focusing on what Garrett would do ...
3) ... based on a completely reasonable interpretation of Garrett's history and personality.
As for your other quotes, do I really need to go into all the different ways you could have interpreted them?

Selective quoting is always for the best. You have to read between the lines to figure out exactly what these hateful devs are saying.
The ellipsis is the shortcut to truth.

So what are you saying? That you hate Thief as much as EM does?
Chade on 27/6/2013 at 23:01
Hey, it's not my fault, alright? You guys called me mean names when I joined. :(
First I was just going to take you all to the Hague, but when that flaked out, I realized I need a company. A company that could burn thief to the ground.
Thus began Eidos Montreal.
Renzatic on 27/6/2013 at 23:20
You started EM just to hurt us for making fun of you that one time? Holy crap, man. As much as I hate to side with someone who's obviously The Enemy here, I have to admit that's brilliant! You come in, do a great job on another well respected franchise, all just to build up our hopes and expectations so you can bash them down with a dumbed up, casual console kiddie version of Thief.
You mad motherf****** genius.

You have to admit, it's a strange answer. I can't think of how Garrett's in-game animations could even remotely be tied to writing and creating the story of New Thief, it doesn't really make any sense.
That aside, it's more than a little disappointing that the video starts off with "We're going to take a little bit of a closer look at the story of the game" and then we didn't really get much of anything on the story of the game. We learned:
-Garrett's an orphan.
-There's a tyrannical Baron in charge.
-He likes technology.
Which is basically all shit we already knew.
And don't you just want to punch B1skit in the face every time they play that intro?
Vivian on 27/6/2013 at 23:37
Well, going out on a limb here, but to an animator how a character moves is fundamental to what and who that character is. That's basically the essence of their job. God's teeth I am so glad we didn't have this constant cavalcade of things to misinterpret while waiting for a game to come out back in the day. It's like we're Danny DeVito in Batman Returns, fishing stuff out of shitty water and sellotaping it back together in weird order. This dudes' comments could mean good or bad things, and until I see the actual story I have no idea which is which. Can't they just show someone trustworthy a good portion of the working game so we can all have something to go on that doesn't sound either vaguely ominous or ominously vague?
Renault on 27/6/2013 at 23:50
You're going way out on a limb - Thief is (supposedly) a first-person game - why are Garrett's animations so important to anything, let alone the plot of the game?
Renzatic on 27/6/2013 at 23:55
You see more of Garrett in this game than you do in any other, even while in first person. You see his hands (a little too often, admittedly), his arms, his feet. A lot of animation work has gone into NuGarrett, despite the fact you don't see him from the outside...er...all that often.
Chade on 27/6/2013 at 23:55
Brethren, it is a bit of a meandering answer. But then, the whole interview is much ado about nothing. He doesn't give out any real information.
It looks like they started work on the animations before the story, probably because they figured they wanted to get some gameplay questions figured out first. (Which sounds reasonable.)
EDIT: and in regard to the animation work, remember they were trying a third person view in the early stages, so a lot of animation work would have gone into that too.
