No offense JTR, but it can occasionally be a little difficult to have a conversation with you because you're so incredibly vague at times. Right now, I have no idea what you're arguing against. Do you not like having any choices beyond how you intend on playing the game? Do you not like the gamey-ness of T3? Are you complaining how the newer Thief games present themselves? I don't know.
What exactly is it you don't like about T3 and modern games in general? What are these great walls you're speaking of? The way I'm taking it, you're saying that if you're able to play the game how you see fit, but it doesn't go out of its way to explain that violence isn't an option (or the opposite, suggest violence even if it's not mandatory), then it rubs you the wrong way.
Clarify a bit for me.

TDS forbade kills of non-combatants only on Expert. Both the min kill and max kill objectives were never used besides that (together with the time frame objective and others more). I can imagine the non-blackjackable alerted AIs were one reason to allow greater amounts of killing.

I like how this single interview shows that many of the people responsible for the new Thief have no understanding of the game, its characters, or more important, its appeal both in gameplay and setting/story. Or, if they do, that they don't give a shit about respecting the franchise and just want to make a cool first-person assassin game because Dishonored was popular, and a thief and assassin are basically the same thing, and nighttime = green and blue, right?

My greatest problem is the changes they're making to Garrett's character.
In short they've made him Boba Fett
Hear me out; In both character's earliest incarnation they were professionals, concerned only about the money to be made because they have living expenses to cover. However later expansions transform them into an archetype that operates purely out of some instinctive need to do what they do regardless of reward. In short they become representations of what they do, rather than whoever they may be as characters.
Now I always knew that Garrett would never 'retire in style' as was his expressed wish. His formative years have left with a complusive need to sneak and steal (also if he did retire=no more core games) but I just hoped we as fans would never have to see what happened when he reached this 'mid-life crisis'.
By giving Garrett a 'stock' personality he becomes limited and diminished as his own character. There was always some degree of mystery to his motivations and true nature in previous games (his reaction to Cutty getting caught vs his conversation with Lotus on Markham's Isle) but now...
As feared Steve Gallagher (Narrative Director) seems to have lumbered Garrett with this archetype; someone who no longer steals for the money but purely for the challenge/thrill. Statements that Garrett chooses what he steals based on what they mean to their owners over their intrinsic value (to decorate his hideout with no less) worry me greatly. Especially when Gallagher states there is something vicariously 'poetic' in Garrett stealing a representation of something he will never have...
I have visions of Garrett stealing Lady Rumford's Wedding Dress just so he can take it back to his lair to sniff it. Maybe lay it down next to himself in bed.
Congratulations Eidos Montreal! You've turned a professional Master Thief into a weirdo stalker who's in it for the kicks :thumb:

Well, you know, fans of stealth gaming in general are peculiar, perverted individuals.

I watch you sleep at night, Dethtoll.
...not really all that thrilling, truth be told. It's fun climbing the trees around your house, though.

That's why, to gain mainstream acceptance, Thief IV will have a brothel level.

Don't be silly. I don't sleep at night.
I sleep during the day.
