Joker's motivation: he doesn't actually have one. He lives by his whims.
Catwoman's motivation: stealing, for the challenge as much as for rent.
Garrett's motivation: stealing, for the challenge as much as for rent.
This is not up for debate. These are the established characterizations of all three. If you want to write Joker/Garrett slash fic so bad, just do it, stop trying to bounce your justifications off me.
Their character motivations are as simple as that?
I don't think so.

Do you read comic books? Like, as a serious hobby, not just picking up an issue every now and then. Do you follow the storylines? Have you read even a fraction of the DCU canon?
No?
THEN STOP ARGUING WITH ME. YOU. ARE. WRONG.
SubJeff on 16/3/2013 at 17:17
Please have a cup of tea and a nice sit down.
And then just answer the question. This isn't an argument, to me, but an exploration of the characters.
june gloom on 16/3/2013 at 19:03
There's nothing to explore. Catwoman and the Joker have been around for decades. Their modern-day personalities have thirty years of comic book continuity behind them. I know both characters far better than you. Please, please, please stop. You are factually, objectively, patently wrong. Please just admit you are wrong, defer to someone who knows comic books more than you do, and GIVE. UP.
You're like Fragony up in here. My God.
SubJeff on 16/3/2013 at 21:17
I know you know them better than me, which is why I'm asking you.
june gloom on 16/3/2013 at 21:30
Is that what you're doing? Because it doesn't look like it.
But if you are genuinely sincerely asking me... the primary motivation for Catwoman, at least before Volume 3 where she turned into a neighborhood guardian type, has always been stealing for the rent and challenge.
The Joker I've described pretty well. He has no real primary motivation -- he is a hurricane force of incredible violence and unpredictable whimsy. His reasons for doing anything make sense only to him (Batman says as much -- Joker's plans have a logic to them, but it's a logic that makes sense only to him, kinda like some posts in ThiefGen.)

Yet again, I find myself wanting to check out some more feedback on Thief IV and what do I find?
An enraged conversation about DC comics?!
dethtoll, please drag your pet back to somewhere else, so that if any Thief people out there are checking us hardcores out, you dont scare them away. We have things we actually want to say about the Thief series that we hold near and dear, and you are continuing to clutter it up with off-topic blather!
june gloom on 16/3/2013 at 22:30
I'm the one scaring people away?
you even made 'hardcores' a
nounAmazing.
Look, Goldie, I'm going to just say something here, from one human being to another. I'm a pretty empathetic person. Just because I argue with someone doesn't mean I want bad things to happen to them. (Except CCCToad.) So, let me be completely honest, which is possible for me because I am not your friend:
You are
mentally ill. Anyone outside of ThiefGen who's read your posts, and a lot of people within, can tell there's something wrong with you. Your fanatical devotion to a 15-year-old game series to the exclusion of all else, the way you talk it up like a religion, ridicule anyone who doesn't march in lockstep with the dogma, the persecution complex you've built up, the way you've more or less wholly, totally, completely
merged your identity with that of Classic Thief, your penchant for narcissistic grandiosity and self-importance, and your inability to carry a discussion with someone who disagrees with you without resorting to "I am smarter than you, you are dumb, I am tr00 Thief fan you are nothing" all speak to profound mental sickness. Even jtr7 is coming off more reasonable than you, and he's
got an excuse.
This is not meant to be an insult. I'm not trying to "agitate" you, or "ruin Thief," or whatever else. I don't find you very pleasant and I don't particularly enjoy interacting with a person whose sole answer for anything he doesn't like is "mugwump jism," but you're still a human being.
I actually feel bad for having conflicted with you this long, because it's clear that you need help, not a fight with a snarky asshole.
Here are some resources to help you. I don't know where you live, so I'm making a guess here that you're American, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Please, seek help. You're only hurting yourself and those who care about you.

As usual, you are cluelessly misinformed. Ultima, Wizardry, and Might and Magic. Then Thief... But as you already know, they are all one and the same. Your experience with LGS comes past midway through their brilliant journey, so it is no wonder that you routinely miss the clues I give you in my posts. Yes, I am a fanatic about Thief, drooling and all, just like I am a fanatic of the old crpgs that created LGS and ultimately were laid into the foundation of The Dark Project. You know nothing of this heritage, your intentions here at TTLG are to fit in with people that you think are cool. My guess is that your own real world social life needs a little touching up. Why is it so important for you that everyone sees that you are the undisputed king of comic books or whatever?! Noone really cares dethtoll, at the end of the day in the Thief forums we are thinking about Thief and not the latest blowup of dethtolls. I guess I have to take my leave of yet another thread about Thief because inevitably it will end up with me stripping dethtoll of any consequential subject matter and then the thread gets closed. Well, hopefully the next Thief thread that catches my attention wont already be ruined by personal one upsmanship bearing no relation to the subject matter of the thread itself, or I will do the unthinkable. I will leave the thread immedietly and miss out on potential opportunities to reveal these secret little trinkets I have here! Your loss... at least the good folks here at the loony bin listen!!!
Fair enough, good day to you then.
Yes, quite right.

See what I mean? You go straight for the personal attacks when I just want you to get help.
