Well if there were a lot of people playing Thief on an 8800 then we could all request a fix. But it doesn't look like there are. There do seem to be problems with a bunch of older games. Wonder if that might convince them?
You never know though, maybe they will do something.

I have ATI Radeon 9600 and Thief 2 looks like the same as the 8800 with turned dithering off. Which can be done only thru editor game mode with toggle_dithering command. Notice that unlit areas now have nasty-greenish color
Hmm, that is exactly what it looks like on the 8800, I wonder then if the card/driver is forcing/toggling the dithering to 'OFF' in Thief...well spotted WinterCat.

Yeah and can we turn it back on, even if in a game config file. Thanks for those pics and info Winter Cat.
I will say that your sky there looks a bit better than mine on the 8800. I have no stars at all.

By defaults its already on, as I showed when playing the same thief folder with the 8800 and 5200 on the 1 pc. I dont believe there is a way to force it on via a game config file - if as I suspect its being disabled in hardware on the 8800...

Well it might be worth while to load up dromed on an 8800 card and toggle dithering to see what happens. If it is fixed in game Mode with it toggled then there might be a software fix somehow. If the toggle does nothing then it is all up to nvidia or someone in the know.
I know zippo about Dromed. Do you use it?

The 8800 has a 10-bit / color-channel engine rather than a 8-bit color-channel one to boost color accuracy with HDR. Dithering is the last thing on NVIDIA's mind
If someone can try the Toggle_dithering / Dromed method and that works, great!
Some other ideas:
Has anyone tried to play with RivaTuner settings in power-user mode?
Also we should start a list with drivers that do/don't work (NVIDIA has a lot of drivers) and don't forget to write down if they are Vista/WinXP drivers.
Maybe with a modern PC Thief can be run through the next version of VMware which supposedly has very good Direct3D/OpenGL support.
My 8800 should arrive in a week or so, but I am not happy to find out that thief doesn't look good on it.....

This is good tech info, I had not reaesrched that deap into the back end of this problem.

If I can figure out how to fire up dromed, and find where to toggle it, Ill have a look. But I honestly dont think this will make a slight bit it of difference as I beleive its hardware level reather than software - Ive tested thief 2 on a 2900XT and its practically the same.

This has already been done, with reference to the 8800 series, ive tested every driver version from 97.xx to 156.xx in both Xp and vista and thief 2 loosk the same under all of those drivers..

I have also tested this, the game runs and i can hear myself walking around, but the screen is black, so this is something im testing with each new beta from vmware.

For now, you will have to run a second card (an FX5200-pci or FX5750-pcie or 59xx pci-e) Thwen use a util like ultramon to change the primary card on the fly and then flip you monitor input - you will be then playing thief on the older card etc.

Open DromEd, File->Open, Miss1.mis
Alt+g to go into game mode
Shift+; to open the console
Type in the command (toggle_d<tab> should fill it in for you), hit return.

Well I just tried it and nothing happened. Am wondering if I have something not set properly though because I tried Light_bright to light up everything in game mode and it did nothing either. Is there something else I should try?
A note: in Dromed Editor mode when I type Toggle_dithering and press enter, Dromed Crashed with the windows error about this app needs to close, send to microsoft or don't send error.
