Reply I got:

Hello,
Usually when our engineers fix a bug, they don't necessarily advertise it in the release notes. Most of the times, only popular bug fixes will get attention in the release notes. And our support forum don't have any practical ways of tracking them. We usually get notified, typically from release notes, only after bugs are fixed. The best thing to do is just periodically grab driver updates from our web site.
I hope this helps.
Best regards,
David
If they don't want to fix it I won't make them do it, but I guess I at least prodded them a bit. Perhaps someone else could use Nameless Voice's that I used and write nVidia about it too. They would notice it is not isolated case.

Simplex, i don't think it's a very good and polite thing to repost the contents of some private dialogue without the approval of both of the speakers. Good manners never hurt, you know.
By the way, i'm still waiting for the answer to my question above (that's not to Simplex but to all folks here).

I think it was just fine to post that note, there's nothing in there that has the "spirit" of confidentiality.
It also sounds like that the truth is they fix some bug accidentally, just be changing various things. He makes it sound like the engineers focus on a thousand bugs and fix them all and only advertise the big ones, and that maybe somewhat true, but not totally.

I am sensitive to privacy of correspondence but in this case I believe it is business correspondence, not private so I don't think divulging it is something bad. Does anyone even know whose correspondence I am revealing? I only know that this id "David" - this could mean anything, the name itself could be fake.

hey, i was talking about your correspondence with vorob and not that guy from nVidia :)

Shadak & calibrator, you dorks! ;)
Update on my contact with nVidia support - today I got the following message and I am not sure how should I understand it:
This might be a little late, but while trying to get TG going I stumbled across this and love it. Thanks for the work and for releasing to everyone. I was simply content that T2 works still, but now it looks like it did back in the day! Congrats!
In response to a couple of things... I wonder if they were asking for permission to use your work. Sharing with the team might mean they could use your findings. Not sure, I took it as encouraging.
Also, I have contacted Nvidia support of the fact that so many driver releases have broken Thief. I mentioned that a fan had resolved the texture issue (my biggest problem) and that they kept breaking what the fans had done. Their response was that their current drivers had known issues please wait for the new drivers. I think it was a canned answer as we obviously still have problems. I think I am encouraged to contact them again though. Thanks for the work!

Right. They are no doubt referring to the 169 series, which have sunk to a new low and created major outrage. I suspect that when they talk about fixing current drivers they are talking about Doom 3 and other recent titles. But well before the 169 fiasco, all Nvidia drivers in the last few years have had problems with Thief. What are the chances that the Thief problem will be suddenly fixed? I'd say very slim, but one can always hope....
In the meanwhile, I have just broken with 8 years of Nvidia tradition and ordered an ATI x1950 Pro. At least this should solve all known rendering problems with Thief while Nvidia farts around.
But anyway, thanks for carrying the banner and contacting Nvidia support. The more the better. :)

Looks like HalfLife1 is now broken on the new Ati Dx10 hardware..

Welcome to the club! Which one did you order?
I got an XpertVision X1950 Pro Super from Ebay which I installed today.
As said before I had a 7800GTX SLI combo and dumped it in favor of the ATI card.
Benchmarks usually show that it is a bit slower than the old cards but the picture
quality makes up for it.
In fact Thief 1 & 2 indeed look like they should with fog, sky, stars, dithering...
When you install the card use the current Catalyst driver v8.1
You should also be able to use high anti-alias and aniso settings.
My personal bonus:
The optional automatic scaling of lower resolutions like 640x480 and 800x600 does
look much better than the capabilities of my TFT.
