OK, "Tiny Personal Firewall" is causing your crash, google reveals that it crashes other Dark Engine games like System Shock 2.
Try disabling it and see if that helps.

Ok guys n gals heres what's goin on so far ...went to CA forum, advice there was to turn off spy/virus scanners ,cookie control and add thief2.exe & the umxsbxw.dll files to the exclusions lists in both spy/virus scans + put virus scan to sleep & disable firewall. Well no luck i still get same error. Anyone else using CA & playing thief? If so how??? Would like to keep CA on PC , seems to do the job well, mabe a little to well....what to do...what to do..???? Anyway if i find out more i'll post. Thanx again...

get rid of CA firewall and get Zonealarm, as far as I know - it dosent suffer from the same issue CA does.

Hey bikerdude, i did think of that however, i had zonealarm before & kept getting hacked. The person(s) would break in and turn zonealarm off. So my sis recieved Ca at her work & it's good for up to 5 pc's & Free so that's where i'm at .Thanx though..

Ah ok, well CA it is then. otherwise if you want to 'buy' something then kaspersky internet suite is one option...

I doubt it... unless you run an unsecured server of some sort on your computer, or are running Windows 98 with no firewall. A fully updated windows XP is not going to have trouble with this.
