Ok, it's now time for me to complain about compatibility issues between Thief and new hardware.
Yesterday I got a new PC with nVidia GTX 260 on board. I'm using Windows XP SP3. Thief: The Dark Project really doesn't like it. I installed the latest drivers (182.08) and tried to run the game. Movies played well, there were no problems in menu, but as soon as the mission had to start, I got a black screen with no sound. I tried to apply DDFix, but the result was absolutely the same. I'm sure it's not a multicore problem (I have Intel Core 2 Quad and checked via task manager that Thief ran on 1 CPU core).
Anyone experienced problems with Thief 1 on this kind of video card? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
See if I can run Thief 2 on XP. I'll also try to run the game from Vista and report whether I'm successfull or not.

Well, I just made a fresh install of Thief 1 on Vista, and it worked perfectly. So it seems that Vista might actually work better with the combinations of newest hardware and video drivers. Hope that will help somebody. But I still would like to figure out how to run the game on XP, anyway.

Ok, I solved the problem by renaming thief.exe into thief_.exe. Thief 2 worked even wothout this strange solution method. Hooray, I can play with fog under XP now. Hope that info will be helpful.

For days I'm trying to get my new Thief 2 working, I've read through forums and forums, tried so many things and nothing helped. I hope this strange trick will be put into FAQ section for Thief 2.

Thief 2 1.18 (Sold-out sofware)
Installation went ok, movies played, but I couldn't play the game itself. After loading the level, only black screen appeared. Tried all things in FAQ section, didn't help. Used DDFIX, didn,t work. Messed with nvidia control panel, no effect. Now I'll remove the ddfix patch to see if it works with only this trick. I don't know where else to post this wonderful answer.
