Thief Universe, storyline, lore... etc... - by Bulgarian_Taffer

Why do I play games?
I play games because I enjoy them. And what is the aspect I enjoy most?
Fantasy settings, universe, lore, etc...
That's why I loved Thief. That's why I love LOTRO. That's why I love WOW.
I used to visit thief4.com each month. Just to see if there are any updates.
Now I went there and saw... "The new Garrett".
Sorry, I don't want to see a "new Garret" just as I don't want to see a new Universe.
Perhaps I'll give it a try - at least if there's a playable demo. But I don't expect the new game to be as awesome as Mists of Pandaria in WoW turned out to be for a lot of WoW players.
To put it short: Thief is dead. Forever.
This new game? Bullcrap.

You know I am a huge fan of the word "canon" here? Perhaps some of you remember what I thought about The Dark Mod and the idea TDM FMs should be in the same forum as T2 FMs :D
Sorry, but the new game is not Thief.

No it's not, it's a new iteration of Thief.
Despite it being derivative it might add to the canon in a good way. I enjoyed Thief 3 even though it had several flaws, and overall I thought the story was a fine edition to that of Thief 1 and 2.
The title of the thread isn't quite in keeping with the OP; you haven't said much about the lore and story of the new Thief.

Come now, let us reason together.
We barely know a thing yet and I for one am quite curious to see where they take it.
Besides which- FMs continue to be churned out. So long as there is the means to create more Thief stories in our beloved Thief universe, then it won't ever be dead.
My Bulgarian counterpart, where is your hope?
Keep the faith, bro.

No matter what ends up happening after the final release of Thief IV: Dark Project, one good thing will occur. We will amazingly have yet another chance to reap as many souls as we can and convert them to Dark Project. The Cloister is so lonely lately, what with only the sickest of crows left now, picking at their own bones! We are in dire need of fresh meat!!! Mwahaa.

I'm tempted to go off again, about how there's not enough info to go on yet, but why bother?
I do wonder why so many people are so upset with the new Garrett strictly based on appearance. Besides the fact that's it's just a couple of sketches - it's a first person game, you're not going to see yourself, people.

Because, like the temp logo upset, the choices show clues into the thinking, and what they thought up for Garrett isn't insulated within Garrett, but has been applied elsewhere, especially so he doesn't look entirely out of place. What his design hints at is a mix of stuff I and certainly others here (heretofore referred to as "we" 'cause it's a lot easier, and hey, less for you to read!) can appreciate and admire, but also question. Again, this is entirely normal, especially among the artists and designers who look at everything with an artist's and designer's eye. It shouldn't threaten or be construed too literally or with amped up negativity. It's okay, taffers.
It's not unexpected that the design invokes thoughts of assassins and ninjas, and an unwell man. We don't recognize the character, and it will take getting used to. Give us the time. Mouthing off is part of the coping, and won't take away what you like about it, or want to believe in.

Comics & movie series regularly reboot themselves, so it's not some unprecedented thing -- although this is apparently some weird hybrid thing, where he leaves & returns years later. I'm willing to let it stand or fall on its own merits though. We already have a respectable trilogy arc established.
