Ok I just bought and got this version that has "XP compatible" written on it and the Eidos logo in a 2cd set.
Which patch do I need to get out of these?

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123228) this thread specifies T1/Gold in the title, if you read down towards the end of the first post, you'll see it's also relevant for T2 and is what I followed recently for both TG and TMA.
I think if you go to your thief.exe and right click and go to properties, you can find the version there.

Ok it says 1.9.0.0 when I right clicked on properties.
What's that??? I thought the highest version was 1.18.

You need then to the product version at the bottom of the list. I have Version 1.9.0.0 and checking my product version, it says 1.18.
