After going through the FAQS I couldn't find anything that seemed to address the problem that I'm having. That being that it crashes immediately upon selection and before getting to any menus or options. I tried this once before on a different installation with the same results, but didn't pursue it at that time. The question is obvious...how do I fix it?

First. What system, what video card?
The solution varies with your setup. I strongly suggest you post that information, then do a read through about a month of the LEGACY FORUM, or a search there for your specific problem.

Not nearly so helpful as your response.

What operating system? XP-VISTA?
Dual core CPU's need to be forced to run the game on a single core.
Some of the Nvidia drivers will not work with the legacy set games.
You obviously have it installed. The audio card should work ok. The CPU, if not set for single core may be part of your problem.
The Video card may also require some adjustment with the drivers.
The Legacy forum is the best place to look for answers.
Opsys, CPU, Vcard are usually the most needed specs. The rest is not usually of consequence.

Currently, I have it installed on XP x64, but I have had it installed on MCE with the same problem. I have Thief II affinity's set for single core, but since TDP crashes before getting to anything usable, I can't do the same for it by the temporary method. I didn't know if the other permanent method would work for this or not? TDP's version is 1.33 and the Nvidia driver is 178.13.
Browsing in the Legacy Forum is like looking for a pin in a haystack in the dark...if you don't know what to look for.
EDIT: The previous installation was when using an EVGA 7800GS CO AGP, so I doubt that the card is the problem.
