When I saw the announcement on FB, at first, I didn't even really look at like. I thought it was some fake or AI stuff. Then I watched the video and nearly cried. It's happening guys ! :D

Okay - so now I need to go deep and learn about the KEX engine... As I am in a state of disbelief that this is even possible.
Thief 1 and Thief 2 - they simply dont make them like this any more... Or more aptly "Nobody ever made them like this!"
(And i thought system shock 3 was dead?)
Do... Do i have to start caring again?
We've been burnt... Too many times.
The Dark Mod was more than we could hope for... Remastered textures wedged into gaps in tbe programming... The shadows - that's were we live... Safety, comfort...
Don't tempt us with you Gloomwoods or even your Dishonoreds...
So many questions... Can we jump, do ropes have to be place on only specific preplanned pathways, does it have QTEs, and is falling in the water insta-kill, level loading sections... So much trauma - a straight up modern remaster - tricksy plotting mes thinks...

WOO-HOO! looks pretty sick.
I just hope fan missions work on it.
Taffer87 on 7/6/2026 at 20:53
This is amazing. I just hope there are tools available to the community for modding and fan mission creation. This is such an amazing announcement and it's coming this winter! Id imagine thief 2 wont be too far behind it.

I have a bit of mixed feelings about texture remasters myself. I can appreciate the sharper resolutions, but it also kind of ends up skirting this line where it's hires but still not realistic, putting it in a kind of uncanny zone. But I can't say it's objectively worse than the lowres originals... Objectively this is better. Well let me step back. That's an attitude I might have towards T2. TDP was even more low res, and could honestly do well with a facelift as an alternative. I'll still have the original to get the old school vibes if I still want.
But anyway this is all an aesthetic debate... In the big scheme of things, I think or hope that this will generate a lot of interest especially among young people, bring new people in, I think they'll really like it, and I think all of that is a great thing. So I'm happy to see this, and I'll enjoy seeing what they did with it because a great game is a great game.

Do you not understand the difference between a remaster and a remake?
This is going to be fundamentally the same thing as Nightdive's Quake and System Shock 2 remasters-- their Kex engine wrapped around the original engine, running the original missions, with updated AI and object models.
If they're smart they'll request permission to include the Thief Enhancement pack, like how the SS2 remaster included SHTUP and 400. Otherwise they'll have to redo a lot of community work that's already been done. Likewise for the hundreds of technical fixes made by TFix.

wondering about the facial animations, they look pretty good in SS2 AE.

Interesting, but the art looks wrong to me, and some of it looks pretty bad.
I'm not a fan of how much they've changed things for no reason. Especially the colours of the world textures.
More different than the originals than the EP, and I already felt that strayed too far in places.
voodoo47 on 7/6/2026 at 22:03
yes, it is very obvious they are putting their own twist on the recreated assets and the overall colors, just like they did with SS2 AE, something one may, or may not enjoy, but it's there to stay I'm very sure.
