I have the Sold Out version of Thief the Dark Project, but it already has a problem. The game always crashes, either as soon as i start the 1st mission, or before it even loads. It doesn't go to the desktop or show any error messages. I have tried all of these and NONE have worked:
1. Re-installing the game
2. Searching the internet for help, including these forums
3. Reading the Readme (it doesn't mention the problem i have)
4. Running it in Windows 98 compatibility mode
5. Tried advice i was given from forums on an unrelated website
6. Read all troubleshooting guides/tips/threads i could find on the internet
7. Running virus scans
8. Checking whether it was using single or dual processor, it was running on 1 by default
9. Running the game on my old Windows 98, it still crashed
I don't know my system specifications or how to get them, any help on that would be appreciated. How do i solve the problem?

How? Via the Task Manager->Processor Affinity?
Still, back up your EXE, apply the permanent patch (imagecfg) and give it try.
In future don't act like a prick if you want people to help you.

And start by giving your system specs.
Are you running XP or VISTA?
What is your Video card.
And as been said DON'T BE A PRICK.
Your system information starts with the CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM. The popups there tell you the Operating system and version, the CPU and available RAM, and the DEVICE MANAGER the internals.
If you read the FAQ's *Both* they tell you of applications that will list your system information.
So to be a prick myself. If you don't know THEN ASK SOMEBODY. They would be happy to tell you how to find your system information, and go from there.

How am i acting like a prick? All i stated was that i already checked whether thief was running on one processor, you're just being mean aren't you? People certainly aren't going to help me if you just want to make me look like an idiot.
This exact thing happened on some other forums. Within days of me registering, someone takes an immediate disliking of me for no reason.

1. I am running XP
2. I think it is a Radeon X600
3. As i said, i'm not acting like a prick, i don't have a clue how you thought of that. If you can't be nice to new members, then maybe its you who needs to clean up your act.

What is your CPU?
The way quoted the your original post and then bolded that point - came off as arrogant and condescending. I read your post the first time. Your problem still sounded like the hyperthreading/processor affinity issue, judging by my personal experiences. I been through this whole song of dance of getting Thief 1&2 going on my own relatively modern rig.
Again I advise at least trying this:-
Back up your EXE, (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/hyperthreading/) apply the permanent patch (imagecfg) and give it try.

edit: It now works fine! It was only crashing after i applied the patch because i was running it on Windows 98 compatibility mode. Thanks for your help!

Greetings
First of all, my english is not the best, so, count with many errors.
Second, i specifically registered on this forum for simply 2 reasons:
to support Slayer's statement's, and to thank Slayer because i had the same exact problem he had, and he, even not knowing gave me the answer for my question. As he, I simply was running out of hypothesis: every attempt was made, every topic was searched and nothing, a blank screen when starting a mission and none of the FACs had the solution, neither the question.
---
I have to say this is not the cold war neither the atomic age, neither every tiny bit of piece of information is codified neither it's so fragile or has to be extensively diplomatic studied so peace is kept among nations otherwize a false step could trigger a 3rd war.
Why am i saying this? Because this forum was really hostile to Slayer, could it be me as i had the same questioning. And curiosly, arrogance came by you people that not also could not answer correctly Slayer's interrogations, but, imagine this, YOU saw arrogance in a purist dilema! You saw invisible lines on genuine questions, on words and phrases that simply demonstrate QUESTION! How prick and paranoid is this? Now you judge.
And why am I so certain and so harsh about this?
Because it's bad when you ask for help and people use the advantage of knowledge or power when you're susceptible by pontual ignorance, the one that seeks answer. And because, every advise you gave was wrong, and worst, you kept insisting you knew the problem assuming Slayer was in pursuit of immediate answers, dennying his concept of the problem, you pushed forward to da question: How Arrogant, Prick, Hypocrite and Insolent is this? Quantify. Ever heard of Psychology's mirror effect? Go search and educate yourselves.
Let's resume, you saw offensive invisible line in pure questions, you assume you knew the answer, you persist assuming, you denied Slayer's dissecation of the problem and you offended him by calling him a prick, how hostile is this? And WORST, every statement you made was simply WRONG. Define major-prick for me please.
And the problem, just a tiny detail of compatibility modes. The cross fire of tips and guesses saying you should turn the compatibility for windows 98 and therefore changing the exe file configuration, resulted in the crash of the game already prepared or patched for XP. The result was a dark screen while you were trying to play a mission. The solution and the description of the problem was nowhere and every attempt was made following FACs clues...
The vacine became the poison and the solution was simply either not changing the compatibility mode for win 98 in the whole process and let it be in XP mode, or turn it back again for XP after installing the patch. Simple, but not discovered by you people. Add this to your FAC questions it would be polite, a chain redemption of pricks.
Cheers Slayer, you gave me the answer for my exact problem, and man don't pay attention to "PRICKs", specially Major ones.
May the pricking not be with you! Never!
