I am considering getting Morrowind and was curious about how well it supports playing as a stealthy type character. Can you hide in the shadows, sneak up on people, steal things when folks aren't looking, perform sneak attacks, snipe while remaining unobserved, pick locks, pick pockets, disarm traps, etc? Obviously it isn't going to play like Thief, but I'm just wondering if it supports thief/rogue/assassin types enough to make it possible to really play the game (and have fun) as such a character (versus being called a "thief," but essentially having to play the game like a fighter)? any thoughts?
thanks for the feedback,

you can do most of the things mentioned.
Stealing when people aren't looking, pick locks/pockets and disarmtraps work best.
If you try and snipe while staying unobserved (and doing it succesfully) the guars won't notice you but whoever you shot seems to always know where you are, although I'n not positive maybe that changes when you reach a higher level. I don't know how much light effects the NPS's vision.
You can totally have fun playing a thief!

Playing a thief isn't quite as refined as thief or similar, since lighting makes no difference in your detectability. Early on, you will need to find ways to block the line of sight between you and any guards, but later, you can get quite far by holding down sneak while out of sight, then walking slowly up to your intended target, even if you are visible.
There have been several mods to deal with this non-lighting related sneaking stuff, which you could find reasonably easily at the Summit or Morrowind Files (If their files are back up).
My higher level thief-type chars can generally sneak by lots of creatures, and I've recently had some fun with sneak and a Daedric Longbow by walking carefully through caves and picking off everything before it saw me. Sneak attacks are possible, but difficult on anything other than animals. Pickpocketing is something I've never been good at, however, since it just isn't too reliable. Of course, it's rarely necessary.
However, you do need combat skills, though short sword and marksman are quite a nice combo.
