Hello,
This never affected Thief Gold, but when I installed and started playing Thief 2 and Thief DS, half the sound wouldn't play for both games.
For Thief 2, you could hear the ambience, but no voices or sound effects. Thief DS has voices and ambience, but no other sounds.
Here are my system specs, as collected from DXDIAG:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2160 @ 1.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2GB RAM
DirectX 11
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 120
Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy
I'd appreciate it very much if any of you could help me fix this.

UPDATE:
I got all the sound in Thief 2 to work correctly now. All I had to do was go to Audio Options and turn off Hardware Acceleration. Now the game plays like a dream :D .
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to fix the sound in Thief DS by myself. Frankly, I'm beginning to wonder if having that game installed is even worth it now. The one major reason is that every time I start the game, it messes with my global desktop gamma settings and, unlike all my other games, leaves them there, so every time I play the game, I have to reset my gamma, which I really don't enjoy.

Thanks for posting how you fixed it. It'll help others looking for an answer to the same problem.
Sorry I can't help with the TDS thing - I'm not technically minded.

I finally fixed Thief DS.
Remember how I said my sound card was a Sound Blaster Audigy? The problem was that I didn't have Creative Alchemy to go with it. Once I installed it, all the sounds in Thief DS worked perfectly. Now I can play the entire trilogy without a problem.
Even though you people never helped me with this problem (no offense though), like nickie said, at least this thread will stay here for future reference. That's what sites like this are here for anyways, right?
