I've always thought of these two titles as being separate, only that DX featured some elements of stealth. It took me a while but I've finally spotted the thief carry-over of (or made the connection to) the "smart guard/dumb guard" convo.
Quote:
CONVERSATION: MJ12 TROOP 1 & MJ12 TROOP 2
TROOP 1: Ahhhh. I need to rest my feet.
TROOP 2: You should go back to the barracks.
TROOP 1: What are they thinking? Eight straight hours of walking around a vacant cathedral? What's the point of that?
TROOP 2: They think he contacted Everett. He'll probably target the computer room.
TROOP 1: We should just smash that thing to pieces and all get a good night's sleep.
TROOP 2: Then there's the gold. The Illuminati are the only other organization that knows it exists.
TROOP 1: Yeah, like they could move forty tons of gold out of here withour being seen. Right.
TROOP 2: All the same. We don't know what they have planned.
It's the one convo in the cathedral kennel with the pissed-off chef. The dialog and the voiceoff wasn't being overly-apparent that troop1 is "benny."
There's also (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119158) Shannon of course, the Unatco HQ thief.
Any one else remember more direct references to Thief?

I had always thought the Cathedral was connected with the Templars. The game tells you that... :weird:
Never thought of it as a refernece at all...

Warren's mentioned (to me, specifically) that DX contained homages to System Shock (underwater base), Thief (cathedral), and Underworld (catacombs).

On the one hand, that's pretty cool.
On the other hand, it's a shame those are some of the worst levels in the game.

:laff:
I love this kind of stuff! And thanks, Digi.
How about the other way around? The first time we see a Keeper putting a key in a lock during a briefing, it's to open a chest with this written on it:

He's locking a book, not a chest. But still, wow, I never noticed that. :o

:o
Quite right! Thanks for the correction!
I blame the close up of chains, and large machine sound fx! :p

Almost absurdly linear, not much of interest going on, and generally a failure to build on the creepy premise (and music). It's pretty frequently cited as one of the worst levels of Deus Ex. The catacombs are better, albeit not a lot better. Maybe it's just that they're short.
...The Cathedral is IMO pretty cool.
