Thief, rebooted. - by SubJeff

Or you just make it exactly like Thief 1/2 but add an 'F' key instead of adding a pile of useless skill/gear upgrading shit that has no place in a Thief game.
TBH, the more I read TTLG the less I think anyone understands why TDP and TMA were so great.

The whole discussion is kind of moot anyway, the most cash-cow games are for boring people, and boring people like climbing (radio) towers, hundreds of collectibles, Riddler challenges, etc.

Smugly advertising your own superiority on the basis of your tastes is pretty boring too, you know?
SubJeff on 5/9/2018 at 12:08
Yeah, playing Batman AC at the moment.
It's what made me think of the technology possibilities now, and how they'd allow for a great Thief game.
You say most cash cow games are for boring people, but don't you think it awfully boring to not think outside the box? It's also boring to only okay one game.
I'm talking about a game which uses new tech and, for hardcore fans, would be very similar in gameplay to Thief 1 and 2.
You'd have to be a compete idiot to not want to take advantage of new lighting and animation tech though. Imho Dark Souls has revealed an appetite for tough, uncompromising games and Expert level Thief is pretty much that.

Here's a video I saw here a while back-perhaps everyone needs to see it again to understand why I think a reboot is a VERY bad idea!

I didn't feel smug writing that, but The Ubisoft Game, the template that has been "perfected" through countless AssCreeds and Far Crys - that thing sells like hot cakes. And that thing is also a huge, boring as hell time sink. Where good literature and movies trim and edit out things, to leave only the essence, the most meaningful things, video games add mundane stuff to boast on price-vs-length ratio. I don't care about those things, as I don't care about coming home from work and doing busywork in a virtual world. I don't see any smugness in that, that's just what I like. And I don't like just one type of games, I have plenty different and interesting titles in my Steam library that are neither Thief, nor a variation on The Ubisoft Game.
As for Batman series, I loved Arkham Asylum. For City and Knight there's a video by Mark Brown on that, which is also what I think about the series:

Edit: I agree about Dark Souls and room for more hardcore games. I love the series, although again, I have reservations about both the sequelitis it got, and the length vs what it does as a game.

Another Thief reboot (which I hope never ever happens) should concentrate on improving the AI and lighting models significantly, not waste resources on skill trees that ultimately make games far too easy, too similar to each other and also pretty contrary to how Thief's progression is in the first place. The beauty of Thief is that Garrett always plays the same and always has the same abilities (in T2 he does have the mechanical eye zoom), the only variables are level design that gets increasingly harder and complex, and your tools that get more scarce as you progress, and it should stay that way. Trying to add puddle-deep elements to a beautifully simple, minimalistic and very robust set of systems is a recipe for disaster.
You're also not going to win anyone over with your "thieflakes" comment, but you already had that same attitude in the Thief 2014 discussion forums so that doesn't surprise me.

@Judith:
The smugness doesn't lie in you disliking those games or the activities they offer, it comes in when you call people boring based on their tastes (and since you don't like those games, you're obviously one of the non-boring people).
Judith on 5/9/2018 at 13:19
The only thing that should be obvious here is that there doesn't have to be any symmetry, and that thinking in terms of if A, therefore -B is rather boring ;)

The other problem with skills trees and earning new items is that is takes away the focus and immersion of the game. The last thing you want the player to do is to be constantly checking some sub menu to see if they have enough XP or gold to afford a pair of high jump shoes. Thief is set up elegantly where each mission is it's own scenario, and your goals for that mission are explicitly stated. The only upgrades that that are awarded (lockpicks, The Sword, special arrows) are items that just come to you through the natural progression of the game. I didn't think the hubs and stores from both TDS and T4 worked very well, and that's the kind of gameplay you'd be looking at with any type of skill tree system.
And backflips? Not sure what kind of skill that would be, but I never thought of Garrett as being all that nimble.
