I rather dream of a reboot like the Black Mesa team rebooted Half-Life.

There's always a possibility that any new game would be good, so I disagree with the camp that says the series needs to end. Even if the game ends being worse than Thief 4, we can do the same thing we did to that game and purge our persona canon of that game.
But if the game is going to be true to the original series, techniques should not be unlockable, any upgrades should be limited to equipment or gagdets, like upgrading your bow, blackjack and eye. I'd like to see it take influence from the new Hitman over Dark Souls, in Hitman you have access to every ability from the start, your points/money buys equipment that gives you new possibilities. Something refreshing about Thief and other older games like Half Life, is that you don't have to deal with a boring upgrade tree that unlocks some features that you should've really had from the start, and the final abilities are just a couple of boosters to those abilities.
If they ever do announce a Thief 5, I'll keep my eye on in since the possibility it's good will always exist. But I wouldn't let myself get too hyped over it.

Christ, Thief isn't an RPG. System Shock 1 isn't an RPG either.

There's a big difference between acquiring new items/tools, and increasing your abilities and skill levels. IMO, true RPGs are focused on the latter, and I don't think a Thief game should go that route. Garrett is already a master Thief, his "abilities are unmatched," remember? But obtaining new stuff like lockpicks and specialty arrows isn't increasing Garrett's skill level, it's just expanding his arsenal. Very similar to Hitman, as some1stoleit mentioned above. So sorry, no skill trees for me.

Brethren, what if I told you you didn't need to use the skill trees if you didn't want to?
I'm talking about making a game that's got wide appeal but which also appeals to hardcore Thief fans.
One could argue that many games are RPGs, but seeing as you can't think outside the box ZB, yeah in the "traditional" sense Thief isn't and RPG.

Guess Mine Sweeper is an RPG then since you get to play out a role of a... mine sweeper

Oh f$&# off Subject. You don't get to airily redefine terms no matter how much of an absinthe stupor you're in.

Jesus christ, after we're done arguing what an RPG is again can we have the what is an immersive sim discussion too.

The last guy I remember to claim that Thief was an RPG was...Goldmoon Dawn. So if anyone wants to make that argument going forward, think about
that for a little bit.
Also remember that originally Teef had a very RPG-like XP system, and even Eidos Montreal decided was a poor choice, so they got rid of it before release.

Depends how the game is designed. Did the devs make the game while considering the possibility that someone might not use the skill trees? Then sure.
