Thief, rebooted. - by SubJeff

RPS are talking about games that should be remade in the latest podcast - the Electronic Wireless Show. It's not out yet, just to be clear, but they will talk about this.
I think it's time for a Thief reboot.
A Dark Project reboot.
The Dark Souls series, and Bloodborne, have shown that tough games CAN be insanely successful and a Hardcore reboot of Thief, without any of the BS of the Thief 4 might just make it in the current climate.
Make it a really tough stealth game with a branching tiered progression system, a little bit reminiscent of Dishonored 1&2 (which are SO Thief inspire anyway) but with skills instead of magic. I'd go for a three branch system - Stealth for sneaking, Agility for climbing/quick movement and Incapacitation for knockouts and last resort combat.
And make the combat like Dark Messiah's - but rock hard with some opponents who are unbeatable and others who can only only be beaten if you have certain skill/weapon combinations. The idea is to make combat nigh on impossible, but still an option at lower difficulty levels. At the Expert level it should be useless for defeating most enemies and only for a distraction before a run and hide.
But this would have to be a proper reboot. Garrett, Keepers, Builders, Victoria, Constantine, Pagans and The Trickster. Tell it again. Tell it just as dark, but with new tech. Still embrace the shadows, still use Stealth in Darkness as the core.
And lets have some more of this type of music.

I don't really think RPG-style skills are a good fit for a Thief game.
Maybe for a Thief-like game, but not for an actual Thief game.

Absolutely not! Thief is fine as it is-leave it to the FM builders to tweak and add on to it-not some major game company that will turn the thing inside out with the end result being something that has little resemblance to the original game.

Actually, I'd rather see a modern-day version of Thief, the one that never got past concept phase at LGS. Something set in modern fictional setting, neither fantasy, nor sci-fi or cyberpunk, more like Alpha Protocol.

You know what I would like is a game where you play as the girl at the end of Thief 3 all grown up and Garrett essentially taking on an old master role. There was a lot of potential there that Ion Storm didn't seem to show any interest in following up. They sort of did that with Dishonored 2, so it could very much work. Plus, there is a lot of potential for interesting story examining how a loner like Garrett handles having a protege, something Thief 4 tried to explore but fumbled with.
Plus from a marketing standpoint, it would make sense to have this star a whole new character as the PC so that new comers can get into it, since she would be coming in at the point to where she is still relatively green.
Also maybe make her fall in love with a pegan girl or have some chemistry there to give ammo for the shippers :laff: that'll help it sell.

No one but me has the courage to say make thief 4 continuing from thief 3 story line.

the post that does exactly that is literally right above yours.

I'd rather have a remade Thief 3 (actually called Thief 3) with gameplay as good as the first 2 before the storyline is continued.
