It's been happening every 2-3 years with Eidos and associated studios--Mergers, forced resignations, layoffs, shutting down of particular studios... Building employee rosters on hyper-inflated sales projections sounds really stupid, but hey, what do we know?

Hahaha! Stephen Russell's post here has had 31625 views! Yeah, subtract all the times the thread was opened and scrolled through for other posts, and I wonder how much smaller the count would be.
:o You've reminded me that I was going to separate the SR post and replies from everything else. I'll stick it on my to-do list.

You know with all that's happened over the years, LGS going out of business after Thief 2, then Ion Storm with Thief 3, and now this, I'm starting to think there might be a Thief curse....:o

It's not Thief, but it's how the industry is run, not allowing for much deviation from easy categorization and formulaic business plans. The businesses paint themselves into a corner and Thief is too risky. EM have spent too much time trying to force Thief into an easier category, instead of realizing it's its own category, while Square-Enix dug itself into a massive hole, putting pressure on their existing developers to bail them out. Thief will probably be okay for EM, but if it doesn't help Square-Enix, EM might suffer anyway, but it looks like European studios will go down first. I wonder about the EM/SE collaboration on an original online multiplayer IP. There are a lot of other factors that are even worse for the companies, though, but blowing it with too many other titles, cranking too many half-ass games out and not recouping the expenses, are big no-nos.

I really like this idea. I've already said that I think the Thief community makes better mods and missions than anything that will mostly likely come out of any studio.
Seconded. If something like this (being able to buy the Thief IP) were to happen my heart would absolutely burst with excitement! Hell, some of the FMs created to date were (imo) better than the OMs. One can only imagine how mind-bogglingly great our version of T4 would be.
We can dream, right?

Forgive my ignorance, but what does IP means?
The only IP I know stays for Internet Provider...:o

IP = Intellectual Property

I just had the chance to read this article and even before reading it I've already posted a few comments on the official FB page of Thief indicating that I smell an "Assassin's Creed" copycat in the air.
Sacre bleu! I was right all a long! ARRRRGH!

Try and explain it to the new wave (college recruits, who were unfortunate as to have their
gaming experience built around consoles... :( )

Sources emphasized the high level of talent and enthusiasm of team members,
many of whom came to work on Thief because of their love of the franchise. Those same sources cited team politics and

setbacks.

According to a source, the demo took nearly 10 months of development time, roughly six of which required the participation of nearly every content creator on the team.
Somwhere at Square Enix / Edios Montreal studios:
"
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude * bubbling water, followed by a harsh cough * did you finish that shader script code ? ? ?" :ebil:
Somewhere from the other end of the studio (about two hours later):
"
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude, I totally finished the first line of the code *cough* *bubbling water* *cough*" :ebil:
