I still like the DX overlay trick better.

Use VSync (set to always on) to fix the speed prob in thief 1/gold. Even T2 suffers from this.

I've been reading through this thread with interest, but could someone please explain in clear language how one sets/forces this V-sync thing? I have a GeForce 7800 GTX.

this is set in the nVida control panel, under display properties, then under the performance settings - youll see the vsync option in there.

Well, all options enabled (AA, VSync, IF, all kinds of crap) and Garrett still scurries around like a freakin' ferret on crack!! He'll run along at a fast clip, then suddenly speed up even more to three times the speed and he'll go flying off a ledge or something. Makes it impossible to gauge some jumps in the game, etc. when all of a sudden when you're "creeping" along, you suddenly lurch forward down some steps or over a ledge.
It's not a 'fix' really to run a bunch of stuff in the background; that's just crazy. I can't ever get the number of programs right to balance it out. And CPU horsepower governors (SpeedGear or Slow) don't seem to have enough effect to bring it down to a manageable level, unless it then gets too choppy to play comfortably.
Even compatibility mode for Windows 98 (crashes) or Windows 2000 (too fast) do any good. I'm just going to have to find an old computer somewhere. Crazy.

That's interesting, but sad.:( I had that problem, but it runs fine on my computer now with a 7950 GT and Vertical Sync in "Application-controlled" mode. I agree that having things run in the background is not the way to go, but I think vsync actually sets the frame rate, so it is not just a cycle waster.
I'm just guessing here, but maybe Vsync is set only up to an integer multiple. Maybe it matters what refresh rate you use. I use 75 Hz, and I have a pretty fast computer (Core 2 Duo E6600), and it works. I have never noticed a problem with 72. Now, if you have an LCD set at 60, maybe the game is running at 120. I don't know. You could run FRAPS or some other program to see what it is doing in-game and compare that with your monitor setting. Maybe the game is running at 120 and the video card is rendering every other frame. Then Vsync would not help.
Again, this is just speculation. Let us know if changing refresh rates or measuring it discloses anything interesting.

My TG started running to fast. I tried a few things, but nothing worked. This thread says to turn on v-sync and anti-aliasing. How do I do that with an ATI card?
Win XP
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
AMD chip ~2.0Ghz
2gigs RAM
I know my refresh rate is set to 60hz. Interestingly, in my CP folder there is Nvidia nView Desktop manager. Whenever I click on it, nothing happens. Any ideas?
