I KNOW WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!
Anyway, I use Windows XP, and I had the "fast problem" with Thief 1-2. But after I installed the Java Environment and it appeared on the right bottom of the screen, this problem solved. So I think, this is the key!
Hope I could help you.

How in the world could installing Java Environment have any effect on Thief?
I would bet nothing, and that it is mere coincidence, as perhaps when you installed it, it set something with your video settings(V-sync likely), and now it works as it should. I suggest skipping the Java install step, and just adjust V-sync and refresh rate directly.

you woul be surprised how many apps have influence on the thief/shock2 running too fast problem.ICQ for example :cheeky:
..but the only solution that works every time (at least for me) is running a movie with media player in the background.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but what solved my problem was I started a program which controls my graphics card (I think it's called Catalyst, I have ATI Radeon 9800).
In that program there's an option which controls the balance between graphics and performance. It's one of those slider-do-hickies, and I remembered that just before my game started running to fast, I had changed the balance to prioritize performance.
So I simply changed it back to "balanced" and the game ran at normal speed again.
This doesn't prove something that hasn't already been clarified, namely the V-Sync and Full Antialiasing making the game run at proper speed, I just wanted to "give a shortcut" if there's anyone out there with the same drivers as I.

That kind of thing should already be in the Display options. I don't have a modern machine, so I have a lot to look forward to, as all of my PC games are older than Thief II...:(

I did exactly what is mentioned above and TA-DAAA! - it worked.
BUT -Then I finished playing and shut off my computer, and when I restarted it to play some more ALL HELL HAD BROKEN LOSE.
When I load a saved game the colours are all messed up and the game shuts down as soon as I try to move around :( Also, Internet Explorer is acting laggy as hell...
'No biggie' I thought,
'All I have to do is fiddle with the options in Catalyst Control Center again!'But as I try to start Catalyst Control Center I am unable to, and the following error appears:
No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your ATI hardware. So I've tried to reinstall different versions of Catalyst Control Center and finding ATI graphic drivers, but to no avail...
PLEASE, SOMEONE, help me out here... Any ideas? Any tips?
EDIT: I have a Radeon X850PRO 256MB PCI-Express

Ok, reinstalled my graphics card along with new drivers, it works fine now... :thumb:

Wow, thanks for the thread, guys =) I know this is a pretty old thread, but I thought I'd post in it anyway, for posterity. I'm sure I won't be the last person coming here for help:
Just updated my computer, and was sad to see that Thief 2 wasn't running very well =(
After checking the FAQ, I'm back on track, and Thief 2 is running way better than it was on my old computer, which is funny because I'm using a Voodoo 3 instead of my old GeForce 4 =D Frame rate's a little low on the higher resolutions, but seeing those stars in the sky makes it all worth it.
For everyone who's having problems with the speed, it's definitely the v-sync that's doing it. Before I checked the board, I had a feeling that it might've been the CPU running too fast...so I tried to increase the CPU strain by increasing the resolution, and it worked a little bit...but I still noticed a speed increase if I looked at the ground while I walked around. I checked the board, went into the 3DFX config utility, enabled the v-sync, and now the game runs as smooth as it's supposed to. I even turned the screen resolution all the way back down and stared at the ground, still went at normal speed.
I don't have an nVidia installed right now, but v-sync options shouldn't be too hard to find in the ForceWear control panel. The usual disclaimers apply: make sure you have the latest drivers installed (or at least the latest ones that will actually support Dark Engine), etc. etc. AA settings aren't necessary to get the game running at proper speed, it's just another strain on the processor...but it will make the game look nicer ;)
Also, for you guys having trouble with the game crashing, this other link from the FAQ will set you straight: (

Edit: I haven't tried changing the refresh rate, but Windows is the only thing that bothers me at 60. Not exactly sure how to change the rate in Thief 2, but I'll look around and see if I can figure it out.
I see refresh rate settings for Glide, but nothing for D3D =/ Oh well.

I gotta give you props for still running a VooDoo3, man! I still got mine chillin in a static baggie right now. Really, really great GPU - still on par with many lower end cards right now.
Anyhow, I just wanted to add into this, when I first fired up my new PC back in Jan, along with installing TDS, T1 and T2 were the first things I installed to the system. My system being a Pentium 4HT 3.06Ghz with 1.5gb DDR, ATi X700 Pro video, X-Fi Extreme Gamer Pro, I encountered that same superfast issue with T1/T2 that most everyone else has. But, v-sync was a bit more of a buggar to fix for me because of the wide screen 19" 16:10 monitor (LCD's can get some nifty effects when you try to push non-native refresh rates :D ). Anyhow, there's a program for ATi cards called (
http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/) ATi Tray Tools that can enable refresh lock for the display, which I needed for the 75hertz refresh rate of my monitor. Anyhow, I've managed to work around the speed issue of the older games by pumping the ever-lovin crap out of the 3D display qualities. AA is set to the highest, along with AF and all those other good display tweaks. I've overclocked the GPU a bit, to keep the frame rates up, and my system runs an average 35-40 FPS in T1/T2, with not rocket guards!
Just thought this might possibly be an option for some.
