Perhaps try the Omega drivers (omegadrivers.net). They have a custom version of RadLinker which allows you to create a custom shortcut to a game that will make specific adjustments to your video card settings, for only that particular game. I use it to enable vsync, mess with the gamma, etc. for Thief on my Radeon 9100.
Be warned that these are unofficial tweaks of the ATI drivers. I, however, have had naught but good stuff happen.

I've played them with a Radeon 9800pro. They cruise along at a pegged 85fps (my refresh at 1024x768; Thief1 looks distorted at 1600x1200). It's just a bit faster than what I'm used to, but *VERY* smooth.
With that Radeon 9800pro
Turn on v-sync. Locked on, not "application selected". Turn AA/AF up to 6x/8x (I think Thief balks at 16x AF). Crank everything up to high-quality, and turn off the optimizations. After all that, UNDERCLOCK your card, if you have to. I don't think I ever bothered with underclocking, since all that other stuff I mentioned did the trick well enough to make it playable.

I never had any of these problems. Nor with my Athlon XP 2600+ with Radeon 9600, nor with my girlfriend's Pentium IV 2.6 with Radeon 9800, not even with my notebook Pentium IV 2.0 with Radeon 9700. Plenty of room for good gaming and not even one problem such as the turbo framerate.
I had some sound problems with my Athlon XP though. Had to put down the sound acc. Still, the EAX on Thief Gold sucks. Hey, you can't have everything. I'm lucky if I've never had problems with T3.

I'm having the same problem with Thief 2 and my question is how do I change the refresh rate to 60 like everybody says?
Speesh on 13/2/2005 at 03:46
I'm guessing this is the refresh rate for the desktop in general. On my computer it is in the desktop properties, go to the settings tab and click advanced. There's a tab in there labeled monitor where you can change the refresh rate. (Don't make it too high when you want to go back up though).
It may be different on your machine but I wouldn't think so.

Ok I turn on turn on the V-Sync,my refresh rate is 60hz but how do turn on antialiasing?

I think you need a bit of a reality check here. You did not just ask, you assumed that I had set the refresh rate in Windows, and you presumed to educate me about my 'mistake'. My comment reflected that. This time I'm not sure what makes you think I was being smartass; but it seems to me that your ego is getting in the way here. I find your superior attitude an affront, and believe me, I need no subtlety when I think someone is acting out of line.
Regardless, your cynisism and contempt are not welcome, so unless you have something constructive to add, might I respectfully suggest that you can it.
Typical Englishmen! :cheeky:

Turning on AA and AF to reduce Thief game speed on your PC is just like reducing top speed of a car by dropping required amount of anchors. You will never get the proper speed.
If you have an LCD, you can just force 60Hz and live with it. With CRT you will kill your eyes. So the best solution will be compatibility mode (if it works) and de-forcing refresh may also work.

Appologies for resurrecting this thread
I encountered this problem for the first time now, but with Thief 2. It's driving me mad.
I've read through the entire thread, but couldnt find the solution :(
First my pc specs:
AMD Athlon 3 Ghz
512 MB Ram
Windows XP Service Pack 2
ATI Radeon 9600 video card + Catalyst drivers 5.10
I've allready done the following:
1: Runned Thief 2 in compatibility mode (98 as well as 2000). Result in 98: Black Screen. Result in 2000: No effect, missions play but still way too fast.
2: Switched Hardware Acceleration off in Thief 2 options menu. Result: No effect.
3: Increased Thief 2 resolution from 1024 to 1280. Result: No effect.
3: Checked windows right mouse click > properties > settings > advanced > Monitor and saw that 60 hz was selected (but couldnt selected any other).
Because my windows language is Dutch and I'm having an ATI video card (while many others have NVidia) I'm having trouble finding some settings described in this thread.
Where can I find V-synch and antialiasing in my videocard settings? If someone has a similar ATI card, that shows the same options in the video card settings as on my pc, I might be able to find it if explained clearly.
The problems began after I installed the program ATI Tray Tools ((
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=733)) to get fog back on my computer (ATI doesnt shows fog as we all know).
Could this has something to do with the speed problem? It must be because it began the first time I played a fanmission after the installation of the program. Now fog is back, and I'm really thankful for that, but this speed problem is even worse. Could it be the program ATI Tray Tools? Service Pack 2 maybe? Here is the thread I posted for the fog problem recently: (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60992)
Any help would be really appreciated.
Update: Never mind, I solved it. Again thanks to ATI Tray Tools :thumb:

I am having similar problems but instead whenever i jump in water or attempt to attack a guard the game freezes. I have tried all of the above options to no avail, is there anyway i can get my old classic to work. My specs are Geforce 6600GT, 3.0ghz P4 processor and 512mb RAM. What is this compatability mode anyway and how do i use it?
