I was pleasantly surprised to see that Wine has made some improvements to help Thief play on Linux. In fact EVERYTHING worked except videos for me on my first install of Ubuntu 8.10. I learned alot and reinstalled Ubuntu only to find that now Thief wont run at all. It hangs when I try to start the map. I did some searching and found that according to WineHQ, Thief is now a 'Gold' application and they claim even the videos should be working.
I have tried using schedtool to see if it has anything to do with being dual core, and I have also tried DDfix with no success. I am using Nvidia recommended driver 177. I also tried setting Thief to win98 with no luck in Wineconfig.
I'm a relative Linux newb and would appreciate if anyone has ideas on why it isn't working for me now. Thanks!
Update:
I just realized that the latest stable version of wine is much older than what WineHQ claims Thief should work on, so I upgraded to the latest beta release and I had the exact same symptoms. The first 3 times I launched Thief, it worked beautifully (Even videos worked). But all of a sudden, and with absolutley no system changes, it quit working. Now I get a system freeze as the map tries to load (in other words, the load out screen and objective screens work, but clicking 'Play' seems to break everything. Thanks for any ideas.
