This doesn't completely solve the problem but try adjusting the gamma, then alt-tabbing out of the game and setting cam.cfg to read-only.
I also have a problem with gamma, every time I alt-tab out of the game and get back my gamma setting is the same, but in game it's actually much darker. After a restart it's back to normal. I'm also using DDFix btw.
Edit: This should probably be moved to the legeacy gaming technical help forum.

Are you adjusting the gamma settings inside the control panel, or are you adjusting with the +/- keys while in game?

i did setup in control panel its set to the max and in the game when i'm saving for example and go back to the game its like its set to the middle level

I have this problem too and it's really annoying. It seems to have stopped doing it in at least one of my Thief installs, though, so if I can figure out what's different about that one I'll post it here. With my luck, I'll fire it up and the problem will be back. :erg:

The gamma resetting itself when alt+tabbing out of the game happens on one of my pcs. It also used to do it when saving or going to menu but not now. I didn't do anything, it just changed. I just moved the gamma slider (?) down and up again to get it back up.
I copied my usual T2 folder on to a stick and put it on my new pc. Same set-up in the folder but it doesn't happen on this pc. I don't know why!

What happens with manually editing the cfg (or whichever one it is...)?

Nickie, I have the same thing, on my old PC (XP 32bit) I never had this happen, but on my new PC (Vista 64bit) it does happen a lot of the time but not always. Reading a book, checking objectives or map, or going to the menu will cause it to happen.

what should i enter when manually editing cam.cfg now gamma is set to 0.5
but i dont know what is the maximum number i can enter instead 1.0 or 1.5 or 2.0 ?? Anyway whatever number i have entered it only changes brightnes of the menu not the game. I'm having this problem for the first time. I will try to reinstal the game and then i will see what happends.

So nobody actually ever figured out what causes this or how to fix it? With my Radeon 9800 Pro, T2 used to only go dark if I alt+tabbed out without going to the menu but with my new card (X1950 Pro), it does it anytime I alt+tab which is a pain because I do that a lot to write notes, walkthroughs, lootlists, etc. TG has done this same thing for me since I started using this computer but it's not as annoying as I don't use it quite as much. If anyone has a solution for this, I'd appreciate it. I'm using ddfix and the widescreen patch, if that makes any difference.
