I'm using a bunch of mods, one being a mod that makes guild/house members refuse all services to non-members.
That being said I've made a Thief character but found role-playing my character he yearns to command a few magical powers as well. So he has also joined the mages guild (which helps quite a lot with being able to train, enchant and to use the teleportation between guilds.)
The problem is I've recently arrived at Ald-Ruin (sp) fresh from my Thieves Guild duties in Balmora and my first quest here is to steal from a deserted Mage Guild right there in Ald-Ruin. So I go in there and it is not in fact deserted. There's a sole member (and a few city guards) who accuses me of being a Thief the moment I walk through the door and attacks.
I'm at work currently but planning my adventure for tonight and I'm wondering if I go get a scroll of calm human, can I calm him long enough to run past, steal the item in question and get back out without being booted from the Mage's guild.
Anyone else managed to accomplish this Thieve's Guild quest without subsequently being booted from the Mage's guild?
Thanks so much

Tried sneaking past or using invisibility before going through the door? Also, you can grab the tweak plug for that mission. It adjusts the guild guard to patrol around inside the guild hall, giving you a chance to get in and sneak around him. I don't remember where I grabbed it from, though. If you want it I can upload it to my site for you to download.

I thought about trying to use invisibility or cameleon but far as I know the effect wears off when you interact with the enviornment... ie when you use the door to enter the guild.
I suppose I could try to be sneaking when I enter the guild, as I have a pretty high sneak skill... though I'm not sure if it's a scripted type entry or if I could perhaps get in sneaking long enough to cast invisibility.
I read a post somewhere else about picking the guy's pocket for the item BEFORE I get the actual quest from the Thieve's guild, so I might try that as well (my save is right before I go into the club where the Thieves guild guy is)
I wasn't aware there was a tweak-mod to fix that particular quest, but I think if I can't figure it out reasonably, I'll just get it using the console or just bite the bullet and go 100% with the Thieves guild and maybe try to make amends with the Mage's guild... been a while since I played, but I seem to remember using another character and being kicked out of House Haullu but being able to do something to redeem myself. I was just hoping someone had run into this before and found a way around it in game.
Thank you anyway for the offer of hosting the tweak for me, but as I said, if it comes to that I'll just force my way through it some other way.

Well you can make amends (which is easy), download the mod which lets you turn down that quest completely, use the console to either give you the item or journal index to say you have done it...but do you even get expelled? I see no reason why you should be, because you don't get expelled when talking to him and you don't get expelled for defending yourself (as long as he attacks you first) and you don't get expelled for stealing when there is no one around to catch you.
Also, not being seen by him won't work as it is a scripted greeting and he will talk to you anyway; though you can stop him from attacking you.

You can kill this guy, and it won't have any effect on your standing with the Mage's Guild. Kill him or not, he disappears after the quest is completed anyway - he only appears for the quest. In fact, that quest is a great opportunity to rob Ald'Ruhn mages guild blind, with no consequences :ebil:

I'm pretty sure he attacked me first and I defended myself, but when I attacked him it said "Your Crime has been reported." Then said "You have been expelled from the Mage's Guild." Come to think of it, maybe he just cast a sheild spell and I hit him with my crossbow.
Thanks for all the great advice :)

So I rewind to a save before I get the quest. I decide to explore Ald-Ruin looking for a scroll of calm Human, no luck, but I did do a few quests and a little pilfering. About an hour blown doing that stuff. Then I decide I'll try the invisible idea. So I get the quest, go in, the guy threatens me, poof I'm invisible and everything is great. He gives up, I run past him, it's all good.
I get down to where the little chest is, I had already picked the lock from the first time I visited by being a sneaky bastard. So I crack it open and there's no sword! I searched high and low... no sword. I killed that guy and the two guards so it was completely empty. Searched EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE... not there. I guess I bugged out the quest by picking the lock prior to getting it. I think my only other save is before I even came to Ald-Ruin, so I may go all the way back to that and just do it right the first time.
Thanks again for the advice.
