thief is a game about reliving childhood trauma of avoiding your parents yelling at you by being neither seen nor heard. deus ex is a game about being a banana and using variety of tools, weapons, or dialogue, to convince everyone that you are not, in fact, a banana.

Dishonored's stealth was almost entirely line-of-site based, and that to me distinguishes it pretty heavily from Thief, which used sound and shadow to much greater effect. That being said, there are no other big-budget games that take such an obvious inspiration from Thief. Skyrim cast Stephen Russell as the head of the thieves' guild, so I guess there's that.

Bethesda did have Emil Pagliarulo working on Oblivion and Skyrim, so it's quite possible that Stephen Russell in the thieves' guild isn't just coincidence.

You know what completely-unlike-Thief game I enjoy for some of the same reasons Thief clicked with me way back when? The first Mirror's Edge. First person immersion, a powerless avatar, tight level design. It's the parts of Thief where you fuck up and have to run like hell.

It's something that I wish the later Deus Ex games had done: better, more fluid traversal mechanics. Not necessarily wall runs and the like (though I wouldn't say no to those), but slides and mantling as dynamic as in Dishonored. Thief is slower and more cumbersome in this respect, but I felt much more like I was a part of the world I was traversing than in the original Deus Ex, for example.

It always surprises me when people comment that they don't like the movement in Deathloop; Arkane is one of the few studios who seem to prioritize that sense of being in the world rather than just gliding over it. And yeah, Mirror's Edge was amazing in that regard.

Deathloop's movement feels great to me. The Dishonored games already feel pretty good, although you don't necessarily engage with that aspect if you're playing slowly/quietly like I usually do. The golden loop in Deathloop is fun as hell in large part because you have the layout memorized and you're hopefully able to fluidly zip through the environment and tackle the obstacles without breaking stride. Which is kind of why the invasions are so great, because it throws a wrench in your ability to execute a perfect mission and forces you to improvise and engage with the game in that way.

oh i loved mirrors edge. i havent played the second one much, and was kind of annoyed that it was a reboot and not a sequal, but i still hope for a 3rd one some day
