When I choose "Exit to Desktop" at the title menu, Thief III freezes and won't quit and go to the desktop. Alt-Tab will not bring up the program switcher, and Ctrl-Alt-Delete does not show the Task Manager. However, I think the Task Manager has actually started, because I can hear the system sounds associated with starting it, it's just that the game will not release the video driver. Otherwise the game works fine. I have tried reinstalling the game, and it has been patched to 1.1.
Relevent specs:
Windows XP SP3 and DirectX 9.0c
Radeon 4670 with latest drivers
Pentium D, 2 GB RAM
Creative X-Fi
Any ideas?

Some new info -- I am playing the game on an HTPC in 16:9 format by using the Thief 3 FOV patcher. When I run the game in one of its native formats, like 1024x768, I can quit the game normally. But when I have it patched to run in widescreen (by going into options.ini, setting resolution=-1, running the patcher and starting the game), that's when I run into the problem of not being able to quit the game without it locking up. When I choose "Exit to Desktop", instead of the confirmation screen coming up, it locks up instead.
I have found a workaround by going into "options" and resetting the resolution to one of the game's native resolutions before quitting. (The patcher applies a setting that the game must not recognize but will still support, because the resolution reads as 283569644x1600 after running it.) Has anyone else encountered this issue, and resolved it?

Never had the problem, but I edited my own ini settings and not through a patcher.
You can try to reinstall, (
http://www.tweakguides.com/TDS_1.html) edit your own settings, and switch to the unprotected T3 .exe that came with the editor. See if that helps.

I located a solution to the problem I was having (which I learned would also occur when trying to load a saved game, which my previously stated workaround would not have helped).
I used the file referenced in this thread:
(

I downloaded Hadley's patch and it fixed my widescreen crashing problem. (Note that I needed to place the patcher, called "t3_widescreen.exe", into the same directory where t3main.exe was located, prior to running it.)
IMO this issue/resolution should be discussed in a sticky FAQ/tech fix thread somewhere.
Thanks Hadley!
