I've been following (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=125120) this thread, and I got to reply 15, and I couldn't find the imagecfg fix in the FAQ that was mentioned. Other steps I took to try to get it to work: one shortcut with one cpu, one shortcut with one cpu and compatibility (first shortcut wouldn't let me edit compatibility), and application with compatibilty (tried all compatibility modes on both shortcut and app., didn't work). I installed using the safe mode path mentioned (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1702226#post1702226) here. The game shows the splash screen, then flickers between desktop and black (this happened for Thief TDP, so I don't think it's a sign of it being broken or w/e), then it gives me the generic "this program is not working" warning. Everything in this post is everything that I can think of that'd be of any use to anyone who responds. Thanks in advanced for any help!
Edit: More possible problems: I'm running 64 bit Vista, and my copy of Thief II came bundled with a sound card that was bought probably 10 years ago.

Didn't work. I also tried compatibility mode with affinity fix, still didn't work.

The FAW post on multicore issues is (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031#hyperthread) here.
It links to Salvage's tutorial, which is (
http://www.thief-thecircle.com/guides/hyperthreading/) here. If you download imagecfg and follow his steps for making and running a batch file, it should fix the freezing from being multicore. However, it would be better to install DDFix which will also fix this, plus give you back fog if you're missing it and allow higher screen resolutions. If you're using a widescreen monitor, the widescreen patch is also highly recommended.
FWIW, I'm also running Vista 64 and got it working using these tools.

Tafferpatcher does all the thing Yandros suggested and more. I'm really surprised it didn't work. Perhaps a complete uninstall and then use Tafferpatcher from the very beginning? (I've got Windows 7 64 bit.)

I got it working; I had to reinstall Tafferpatch. No idea why it didn't work the first time. Anyway, thanks for the help!
