The Dark Project is working (after the tinkering and advice from these forums), but no movies whatsoever! I've downloaded the indeo codecs as advised, but when I click on "intro" in the main title, nothing, and no movies in between missions! When is the first cutscene even supposed to play?

Search around for a sticky FAQ or something. I came across your problem while I was looking to solve my own problem earlier so there's a good chance you'll find the answer there.

update: installed indeo codecs, k-lite codec pack, then installed thief. Movies worked the first time I played it, then not at all. Tried the ".bat" solution, and tried the run "regsvr32 (thief path).." solutions for xp. neither worked. has anyone found any permanent solutions?
Edit for above: Thanks :). Couldn't find a sticky or FAQ with anything other than the above solutions, neither of which worked :(.

Order in which I did things- I have NO idea if any of these steps could be skipped, as I JUST learned that Win 7 comes with the indeo codec already, it's just disabled:
1.installed indeo codecs 5.11
2.installed k-lite codec pack full, associated everything with Windows Media Player (you'll see, it's a step in the installation)
3. Installed Thief: The Dark Project
4. Ran game as Administrator.
movies Worked! if it's possible that I could have done step 4 from the start, well whatever.
You'll still need to go in and change how many cores it's running on.

Funny - I've got a similar problem now in Vista. Earlier I had only tried loading a gamesave. But when I tried starting a new game it crashed out and I'm fairly sure it must be the video briefing. In my case I can't even play a game except old gamesaves.
I'll have a look at this another time, probably tomorrow.

Windows 7 comes with the Indeo codec installed. Not just that, but a more recent one than any other available version, which (as I understand it) has some security issues fixed by Microsoft.
You shouldn't install the codecs on Windows 7. You just need to register them because they are deactivated by default.
For Win7x64, just run regsvr32 "%windir%\sysWOW64\ir50_32.dll" from an Administrator-level command prompt to register the Indeo codec.
The command for Win7x86 is simply regsvr32 ir50_32.dll without needing to specify the path.
For Windows 7 x64, you need to run Thief and SS2 as administrator in order for cutscenes to play. The rest of the games should run fine without administrator privileges, though.
