So i get this Direct3d error when trying to play a mission, so then i downloaded the Thief Gold Nvidia 5x.xx Driver Fix, and overwrite the thief.exe. And now it can't even start the game! when i start up the exe the screen goes black and it says "Thief gold has encountered an error and needs to close", which is extremely frustrating.
EDIT: my system specs are
Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS
512mb RAM
Soundcard AC97 Realtek Audio
Windows XP
Using the Thief Gold 1.37 game

doesn't work, still says "has encountered an error and has to close"
but this time, before it starts up it says i need to have direct x 6 installed and that i will be forced to play in windowed mode ( I HAVE DIRECT X 9 FOR CHRIST'S SAKE FFFAGISADGFAS)
does the fact that i downloaded the game have anything to do with it? they didn't sell it in the netherlands anymore so it as my last resort.

Yes, we have seen so many problems with the downloaded versions. But that said you have an oldish setup so it should just work, but...
Please supply the following:-
* What motherboard you have,
* what cpu yer using,
* what version of xp,
* what nvidia gfx driver version.
That direct 3D error can be attributed to a fubard gfx driver install, so...
* Uninstall the nvidia driver, then reboot,
* then download and install "nasty file remover" - take care to
ONLY remove the nVidia display driver files.
Then you can re-install the graphics driver:-
* Install an older gfx driver more suited to your card - (

* Install the latest driver for your card if you play newer gasmes aswell - (

I'm terribly sorry for being such an unwitting pain in the ass, but i have no idea how to check all those, all i know is my version of XP and my nvidia gfx driver version (181.22)
