I had went back and re-read my review and I guess I had forgotten over the years how close it came to being the Thief experience. I was quite smitten with it and admitted as much.
FYI, there's a quote from that review listed as a testimonial on the (
http://www.thedarkmod.com/main/) TDM main page. Not sure why I mention that, maybe because it's sort of funny considering the current conversation.

That is funny. I had no idea that was there. :laff:
Again, I never meant to say that The Dark Mod wasn't good - just that it unfortunately could never be a canon Thief experience. Springheel made some good points about the new game straying from the typical Thief experience as well and I see that side of the argument as valid. I've talked it to death in my last post though so I'll leave it at that. Preparing to give it another spin so perhaps I can post some updated reviews if I get the time and make myself look even more ignorant about how much it's changed since 2009. ;)

I suppose my meaning there was that people want to see what happens next in the canon Thief universe and unfortunately The Dark Mod can't speak for that.
Keep in mind, Thief "4" can't speak for that either since they have decided to reimagine the Thief Universe. This game doesn't follow the original Thief cannon. It's more like a universe that runs parallel to the original but things happened differently. Aside from a legal document that says Eidos owns Thief, I don't see it as any more legitimate than the hundreds of fan missions out there.

Yeah, TDS wasn't LGS, but there were quite a few LGS people involved, so it somewhat legitimized it. T4 will be canon only in the legal sense, and none of that "officialness" will mean much to the fans (even more so given that it's a reboot).

As we speak I'm re-installing my copy of Doom 3 and downloading The Dark Mod's newest version along with the fan mission you suggested so I'll do just that.
I don't think I've every felt as much like I was playing Thief as when I was playing In the North. Rich story, great gameplay, high production values...just don't confuse "chapel" with "church". :)

For some reason I've missed the fact that it's a reboot of the entire Thief universe and thought that it was just going to be a continuation of the series in a different location/setting. I guess that does change my stance a bit on how The Dark Mod compares to the canon lore then if they're hitting the reset button on all of it. But again - I wasn't saying The Dark Mod wasn't a legitimately great piece of work.. this entire debate was started from someone saying they should have just renamed the mod Thief 4. Now if it were an argument for bringing in the development team behind The Dark Mod to create Thief 4 - now that I would have been behind wholeheartedly.
If the game on final release feels less like a Thief series game than The Dark Mod does then I'll happily admit that the new game was a wasted opportunity and I'll play more Dark Mod. Either way there is no harm in enjoying both. Hopefully the new game will be good, the standalone Dark Mod will be great and people can play and enjoy both.

I've already downloaded it and it's going to be the first one I try. I'm looking forward to it once The Dark Mod's files are all downloaded and I can play. I've also gotten your mission "A Score To Settle" lined up as well. Though it says it's a challenging mission meant for Dark Mod veterans so I may have to play a few more before getting my backside handed to me in that one.

You don't know that T4 isn't adding to the canon, but heavily revising and throwing a lot out?

I wasn't aware that details on the entire story had been released so no - I didn't know what they'd be adding to the lore or what won't be present. I doubt that anyone does being that the game has not yet been released nor played through by a single person.

The devs have officially announced that this Thief isn't a prequel or a sequel, but a reimagining. Basso's girlfriend Jennivere is now a bird apparently.
