Why don't you guys do something more constructive with your time until this game comes out, then rent it and decide your opinion at that point. ?
I don't really get what either the apologists or the doomsayers are hoping to achieve.

You've been registered since December 2000 and you still don't get the point of discussion forums on the internet?
zacharias on 15/6/2013 at 11:18
Sure i do. But this isn't civil or interesting discussion in my view.

We know what we're trying to achieve. And you don't want the forum to go dead except for opinionless links to news and images. There's a lot that's not understood, but there are personal choices one can make.
"Doomsayers" suggests prediction. It's already happened. The shit has hit the fan several times over the years, and hope for improvement is rewarded with some improvement and a lot of WTF?? elements. Shutting up and going away is how nothing gets changed. Change is good, right? Open minds accepting change... I don't accept 3/4's of the changes, but am really relieved and glad about some others, and there are changes that can only come by speaking up, like you are, hoping to stop what you aren't liking, especially because you don't understand. We who speak up on all sides all speak against what we don't understand when asking for knowledge in order to understand doesn't bring it.
If it's not interesting, why are you reading it? Of course it's interesting. It's more interesting than video games! People have insane backlogs and would rather fight on a forum, hahahahaha! You are not above it. You are dipping your toes right now.
zacharias on 15/6/2013 at 11:49
I am not saying I am above it, per se. I do however have better things to do than argue for too long about a game that, in our heart of hearts, i think most of us suspect or acknowledge won't come close to the magic of the LGS games.
If you really think the devs are paying a lot of attention to ttlg when they assess their progress, well, more power to you. I don't really agree.
"We who speak up on all sides all speak against what we don't understand when asking for knowledge in order to understand doesn't bring it." Read this sentence three or four times. Though I admire the condescending tone, you must work on the wording some more to be properly understood!
So no, it really isn't that interesting. Maybe I am getting too old for games and all this. I wouldn't mind if they closed TTLG (except for TEG and Fan Missions forums). It is a shadow of itself isn't it. Just like Thief really.
All the best with the arguing anyway :)

If only the devs had their Focus mode on when making a friggin' Thief title, and made another Thief title instead of a big pot of chunky stew with a thin but pungent Thief broth base, loaded up with popular and trendy mystery meats and a kinky overuse of salt, rather than bucking the damned system. LOL
That analogy just lapped the earth at the Equator twice. I love it.
Perfectly apt, though. The fact that the developer interviews continually return to the subject of 'playing other games for inspiration' is beginning to come into sharper focus.
The actual Thief series feels like it was way down the list of inspirations,
well beneath games like Dishonored, Splinter Cell and Skyrim.

If it were Thief in greater proportion to the rest of it, it would not sell as well as DX:HR, but you don't choose to make a Thief title and not plan for that budget, and to keep it focused!
See, I'm not even certain sales would take a hit, if marketed properly.
The older games did fine, in a fairly shooter-heavy, action-oriented market. It was a different industry then, true, but I remember encountering Thief: The Dark Project advertisements (I never played the demo, so it was actually these ads that inspired me to try the game originally). Eidos did a decent job marketing it, and the nuances of gameplay weren't sacrificed. Sales were strong. Mission accomplished.
I've always maintained that neutering gameplay and making your title 'more inclusive' doesn't sell games. Advertising does.
And the basic premise of the Thief games - infiltration, remaining unseen, outwitting enemies - is not necessarily 'non-commercial'. Every kid plays hide-and-seek. The idea has universal appeal.

"If marketed properly"
YES! Not gonna happen, so I don't bother.
Thief games, as a brand, have been a lot more than 3 pillars that appeal to the kid in all. People hate a lot of Thiefisms to the point of selective amnesia.
