I'm trying to play Thief Gold on my laptop.
I'm using Windows XP SP3.
Don't have any real top notch graphics card, I'm using Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express.
Managed to install the game. But whenever I start the program the screen turns black and then crashes.
I already install the Indeo codecs as said on the FAQ,and most steps like installing DDFix (Did not work, caused an error that says thief.exe is not a valid win32 app or something of the like)
Tried changing compatibility to win98/ME and win95.
Nothing worked, the furthest I got was a black screen and crashes, no sound no graphics no menu, nothing.
I would really appreciate if anyone can guide me through this, as I'm really blindly hitting walls at this point. Just to see if I missed out on any procedure or stuff. Thanks in advance.

Thanks it's now all up and running! :)
Apparently I missed the part where I need to optimise "Thief" using "Darkloader". After that all went well.

The game was ok, the videos could load and the missions too, just that the frame rates were pretty screwed (it was kinda freezing, not smooth), so I used the Thief Gold 3D Texture Error Fix.
After that everything seemed great until I tried to load the missions, the game crashes. Same goes when I try to play the intro.
If anything, in both instances, I can't play the game. The normal ddfix fixed the video problems but is so laggy, it is unplayable. the texture fix fixes the frame rates, but causes the missions and vids to crash. Anyways to integrate both?
I tried using the ddfixGUI.exe on the texture fix exe, but it just rendered it unplayable. Error message stating that it is not a valid win32 app.
I'm a little confused as to what to do now. Please tell me how to fix this? :(

Well, thanks for the link, but it didn't fix the frame rate issue. Any way to fix the direct3D texture fix patch to allow it to play movies and the game?

that is kind of strange,as the framerate is fixed to 65 FPS (see ddfix.ini, you can set it even lower if you want).edit: aha-I think you mean that the game is slow.well, your graphics card is not exactly an excellent performer,so you will probably just have to live with it.
anyway,make sure that you:
-do not use any compatibility modes
-do not install the game to program files, windows or some other protected folder (C:\games\thief gold would be ideal)
-if you are applying that patch I have linked, make sure have a fresh, clean, untouched install of thief gold (that means uninstall the game, delete the folder, and install it again).
as for the movies, there are many opinions on how to fix this issue-I personally recommend installing the (
http://www.cccp-project.net/) cccp codec pack-I'm using it,and never had an issue with thief movies, and I didn't even install the original indeo codec.

Well, by some luck, I was able to load the missions by estimating where my cursor was... the menu is really bad, but once the mission is loaded, there was not much problems, until I clicked pause and the menu popped up. Hopefully it'll stay that way, but going through the menu is such a nightmare needing to estimate where to click. lol
Slow, well in a sense, the screen is not updating itself properly... you can hear the sound of the cursor hovering over the buttons but the cursor sticks at one place or "splits" up. lol, well I think you get it...
But if it is the problem with my graphics, the direct3D texture fix wouldn't have fixed my menu... Well, it fixed the menu but in turn made the missions crash. =.=
Your fix does everything but fix the menu, that was what I meant in my last post... and the driect3d patch fixes my menu only. weird...
Oh and thank you for your help... Anyone else who has this queer problem, I'd really appreciate a solution to it....

edit ddfix.ini, find menuupdatedelay, uncomment it (remove the ; from the beginning of the line),and set the value to 25.
