Hello everybody,
I read here that Thief Gold only runs with very old nVidia drivers, but i managed to play it with the "191.07_desktop_winxp_32bit_english_whql" installed (which was released less than a year ago and i havent bothered to update since then). I guess a few people might be interested, so i thought i'd share.
My System:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
Motherboard: ALiveNF6G-GLAN
Graphics: nVidia GeForce 7800GT
Sound onboard
WinXP Pro SP3 32bit
I don't think, the rest is important, but feel free to ask.
I also use the RivaTuner v2.24 MSI Master Overclocking Area 2009 edition. Since you can force FSAA with it, i play Thief Gold with 8xAA! :)
I chose the 'complete' installation. I use the thieffixedg.exe to play, and since i have a Dual Core CPU, i used the imagecfg.exe to play only on one core. So far so normal. Now the weird thing, that i can't explain, but works for me:
I can't play any missions right away. If i start a mission or load a savegame, the game will freeze within a few seconds. BUT i can play the training and after loading the training once, i can load mission savegames and play just normally. (except for one bug: Sometimes, when i press Esc in the game, i am unable to move the mouse pointer over the whole screen. Only a rectangle at the top right corner is available. I guess it is a 640x480 pixel wide area on my 1280x1024 screen. But hitting Esc twice (=back to the game and back to the menu) usually solves that)
So what i do is: I start the game, start a new game, start the training. As soon as i am greeted by my friendly instructor's voice, i take a few steps and look around a bit (this is IMPORTANT, doesn't work otherwise) then hit Esc, go to load and continue playing where i saved last.
I have not tested this on other systems or with other drivers. I have not tested it with modified textures, etc.
Yet i hope this will help some people play my favourite game without having to assemble a computer with parts found on the scrap yard... ;)
Good luck and have fun!
