So I downloaded Thief Gold from Steam recently because I heard that the first Thief game is amazing (I know, I'm a little late to the party), but I can't run it. In it's unchanged state (running THIEF.EXE as admin) I open the game, and it skips the intro (where it shows the company splash art and whatnot). However, I can get all that to play by clicking Intro in the main menu. When I click New Game and start the training, the cutscene plays on its own. Then when I click Begin from the mission briefing screen, the game crashes. It also crashes when I try to open the options menu.
I've tried just about everything suggested to fix this. DDFix did nothing (it looks like the version of Thief Gold from Steam already came with it, but I manually installed it anyways just to be sure, replacing all of the files that were apparently already there. I changed the DDFix settings as recommended and tried both using the pre-patched .exe provided and using a hex editor to edit my own THIEF.EXE.
I've tried whatever it was that was suggested on the FAQ page, but I'm pretty sure I did that wrong, because it was very unclear about what I should do.
I've tried running the game in compatibility mode for just about every version of Windows.
I've tried Flip TIB to change the number of cores used while running the game, but I couldn't get Flip TIB to work. When I click on the application that came with the download, I get a window that tells me what Flip TIB does and asks me if I want to install it. When I click Install, nothing happens.
The most progress towards getting the game to run occurred when I patched the game with TFix. When I did, the intro cutscene (the one with the splash arts) played on its own without me having to play it through the main menu. This is the only progress I've been able to generate. Other than that, there was no change. I even tried the hdradeon_winxp fix despite the fact that I don't have Raedon drivers and am not running Windows XP. I'm that desperate.
Speaking of, My specs:
I'm trying to run the game from a Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop with an Intel Core i5 CPU and 6 GB of RAM. I'm using Windows 7 64-bit. While my computer isn't exactly an Alienware gaming laptop, I feel like I still shouldn't have a problem running a game made in 1998.
If anybody has any suggestions for things I haven't tried or things I may have done wrong with what I already tried, please help me. Any suggestions, and at this point I do mean ANY, will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
