Something must have changed in my W7-installation. Maybe last month's uninstall of ThiefG/2 itself did something?
Try running it as admin. Are you running it from a cd?

Yes did that and yes from CD (original 1999/2000 copies btw). It's not a disaster, there's always manual or tafferpatch, but I would like to know

Interestingly enough, when I tried installing T2 normally on my new pc with Win 7 it wouldn't work either no matter what I tried, so I just used Tafferpatcher. For T1, I didn't even install it, I just copied the folder from my old pc (which also had Win 7, but I don't remember if I installed them normally or with TP or Tfix to be honest), into the new one, and it worked fine. It might be just a weird issue with Win 7.
