Hi,
I remember this subject was discussed back in their times but I only finished lately Thief 2 and bought and began Thief Gold too, I'm at the "Mage Towers" level and I'm impressed by this game more than I was in Thief 2. I always thought it was an improvement over the first game but I've to say that the first game with its massive maps and a sort of deeper "scary" atmosphere with the sound, make the game impressive more than the second. I already said in the T2 thread I played it in a bad PC configuration that instead seems to run perfect on T1 (both legacy DX6 mode) without the problems I had in T2.
Sure the Thief2 graphic is improved and more detailed but for example I was in the Air Tower of the Mage Towers level of T-Gold and the music/sounds effect are so deep and "magic" that make the game to looks like it had a totally different idea in mind. Not to mention the previous level ("Sword" I think) with those strange rooms design and all.
Which one do you prefer, the first game or the second?
Bye

Back then I was really happy that there were no zombie-haunts levels in thief 2, cause I was super scared of them in thief 1. Down in the boneyard, the haunted cathedral or return to the haunted cathedral were the missions I had the most respect of and I thought I´d never play them again after finishing them for the first time. After playing both thief games a million times, I have to say that especially those missions were the ones that I liked to replay the most. Also the last mission of thief 2, cause imo it was the most difficult one. My favourite missions are mansion missions though.
But to answer your question: I don´t prefer either of the two games. I love both the same and I love every mission that was created the same and even though there are a full dozen awesome fanmissions out there, imo none will ever be as good as the two original games. The nostalgia parameter is just too high :)

I understand it's difficult to prefer one of those games, both are great; back in those times I didn't finished both games and I didn't realize how different they are. I usually don't like to use any graphic patch to increase details or quality cause I like how games were supposed to looks like, so I sure appreciate how Thief II looks much better and detailed from the first game but sometimes it seems like not all the levels are interesting, sometimes even when difficult seems like loosing that "magic" sort of scary atmosphere that I also remember was quite scaring back then (somehow still nowdays :D) but at the same time creating more that unique feeling the game is remembered for. :)

I find thief 1 looks... very muddy and bad compared to thief 2 which is much clearer in color and definition.

For me,
Thief games score:
Thief 1: 10.1/10
Thief 2: 8/10
Thief 1 is waaaaaay better.

Good fan missions>TDP>TG>T2>Average fan missions>T3>Bad fan missions, and that's the entirety of the thief universe.

As said I always thought Thief II was much clearer and detailed than the first game and even if nowdays those differences would seems like sort of invisible, back in those days I remember I was quite impressed with the Thief II demo coming from the Thief 1 game, but back then we usually appreciate any differences, even only higher resolution textures or some more polygons. :)
But for example in the second Thief II level I remember I was bored by the whole atmosphere and not only in that one.. I would not save many memories of many T2 levels while I'd say I just began the Lost City level on T-Gold and most levels until now are memorable. Sure less detailed and more '98 like PC graphic, with low polygons and low res textures but still more interesting.

I wasn't expecting that there're fan missions better than the original developers one that must be costed a lot in time and design. I don't know any fan mission because I've never tried them and still have to finish TG after finished T2 but I'll ask for the best fan missions out there to try. :)

You have much to discover! There are easily 100+ FMs that are hands down better than the best OMs, and many more than come close.
To be perfectly honest, most of the original missions are very sloppy in their design. Moreover, NewDark makes it much easier to make bigger and more intricate maps. (Also, note that the original developers had to do all of the hard work developing an engine--we FM creators mostly get to free ride on that hard work, and just focus on the missions.)

This topic has been brought up many times, but yeah I still prefer Thief Gold to 2. I love the supernatural elements, the grittier graphics, the darker theme overall. And Thief 2 is supposed to have taken place merely a year or so after the original, yet the fashion and tech took an unrealistically gigantic leap (medieval to Victorian/Art Deco).
