Thief Gold vs. Thief 2 - by Hesha

And then there are many levels where you don't get to do any actual thieving. Escape, Strange Bedfellows, Maw of Chaos - not terrible, but it's not Thief to me.
That's kinda the point though story wise. Garret is forced to do what he was actually raised and trained to do to by the Keepers and help maintain balance in the world.
Besides, if you look hard enough in Escape, you can also steal back all the loot you've collected in Return to the Cathedral.
EDIT: Recently picked up Thief 1 again and loved it. Haven't played TMA in about half a decade and don't remember too much from it, so I can't really say much about it, but I do remember it being great as well. Although I do remember preferring the story in 1 due as the second's ending was very abrupt. (Seemed like LG was really banking on the game to break out of their financial issues back then sadly.)
Double EDIT: One thing I appreciate about the two games in general is the unifying theme of Man vs. Nature. In the first game, the forces of The Trickster threatened to destroy civilization and bring back a time where it was nothing but forests. In 2, Karras wanted to destroy all life and bring about an age with only machines. Garret is ultimately forced to break away from his thieving lifestyle to deal with both and by the end of 2, it seemed like he was finally willing to listen to the Keepers. Looking back, I'm not sure how much of this was intentional right from the get go with all the complaints about the original's super natural moments, but I think that's really cool.

Both Thief 1 (TDP/TG) and Thief 2 are the best games I've ever played - and that's because in both games the atmosphere is just unparalleled. I think one of the biggest reasons they are so memorable games is the sound design. All the thrilling ambients that create such tension, memorable guard conversations and shouts - humour that I haven't experienced with any other game! And such amazing voice actors!
I like Thief 1 slightly more than Thief 2, and that's mostly because there are so much variable missions in Thief 1. I liked the voice acting a bit more in Thief 1 - guards have more memorable shouts and voices. Overall Thief 1 is very surreal, epic and dark journey. For me the top five would be something like this: Down in the Bonehoard, The Sword, The Lost City, Assassins, Break from Cragscleft Prison.
TMA has amazing missions and I think the best ones are the ones that differ from the others - Trail of Blood, Kidnap, Sabotage at Soulforge. Life of the Party and First City Bank and Trust are also my favourite ones.

Now I want a new Thief game :(
Thief 1 was just so, so good. I agree with you Lord Taffer - the atmosphere is great. Those ambients really make it! Even when you just drop into a mission.
What's really sad is the tech is there now to make a really, really great Thief game and we'll never get one. Dishonored showed us how to really, really do mantling properly. Imagine what you could do with all the lighting and sound occlusion tech now, with a really, really dedicated Thief game. Add some realistic buildings that allow for real emergent break and enter gameplay, realistic physics rope arrows and climbing...

Kinda sad how nowadays, whenever we see a potential sequel or remake for something we really loved, it’s just accepted that it’s just not going to be as good. Because the game industry gets so caught up in trends and appealing to as wide an audience as possible leading to diluted gameplay and cancerous shit like micro transactions, day 1 dlc and shoehorned woke politics.
Kinda crazy looking back how publishers even back then were skeptical about what would eventually become Thief, and yet it helped establish an entire genre. Good luck having something like that happen nowadays...

The tragic thing is that they don't even continue Dishonored because it's so unpopular. Silly times. :( Especially when you consider the typical kind of game these days. Gameplay thin as a paper and extremely repetitive and boring, and settings which are totally dumb, unrealistic, and unoriginal. From a creative point of view, the game ecosystem is at a complete low point.

Dishonored 2 was a shitshow tho.
I mean dishonored 1 had consistency and was very subtle but dishonored 2 straight up eliminates alot of these things.
The story is so extremely offensive, no wonder where taken aback.
Dishonored and thief 2014 both showed us that people are very hungry but it also shows us that they have high standarts.
I can only urge to not give up yet... People want games like these.

??
Care to elaborate? I don't understand the "shitshow", "inconsistency", or where the story should be "extremely offensive".
I also don't understand how you can compare Thief 2014 to Dishonored, or say that "people want games like these". The sales figures clearly indicate that that is not the case. As much as I hoped it was.
Frankly, your post doesn't make sense at all. Sorry.

I dont want to spoil things for dishonored fans.
But thief 2014 has 11K reviews
Dishonored 2 has 18K
And dishonored 1 has 36K
Dont tell me you dont see a trend there.
People clearly love this stuff.
I dont think you should expect sales figures like cod or battlefield in this genre.
I think we are doing great.
I am looking at steam reviews only.
