Hi guys. I've been lurking for many years and finally need help for once :( . I've installed thief gold and applied ddfix and the widescreen fix. I have the latest catalyst drivers. My computer specs :
Intel e6850 @ 3.6 ghz
Ati Radeon HD 4890
2 gigs ram
Windows Xp Home Edition
I've also installed Daeomite's meshes, thief enhancement pack, and oRGy's textures. The videos work fine and so does the sound and speed of the game. The problem is that the game tends to crash when even I exit the game, go to options, leave options, etc. I never crash while actually playing and can go through the menus just fine when i start the first mission.
The main problem though is when i optimize the install with darkloader, the game crashes right when i enter the menu. I copied the files from the RES folder back into the main root of my thief installation and it stopped crashing. I tried playing a mission such as 'Calendra's Cistern' but it crashed anyway right as I entered the menu
My install.cfg looks like this:
install_path G:\ThiefG
language english
resname_base .\EP\Thief1+.\EP+.\fam+.\mesh+.\motions+.\obj+G:\ThiefG\Res+.\
load_path G:\ThiefG+.\
script_module_path G:\ThiefG+.\
movie_path G:\ThiefG\movies+.\
The same thing happens whether i do nocd or not. I have tried modifying the file countless times but the same thing happens. I really need help, guys. Thanks for your time :cheeky:

Hmm... Your case is hard enough to resolve because of numerous patches you've applied. Try to be Sherlock Holmes for awhile :) :
1) Install Thied Gold anew. It'd useful if you'll make a copy of the game's folder as a backup.
2) Install one patch at once.
3) Verify the game. If something wrong, then uninstall that patch and go to 2).

Him your install cfg looks odd.. here is what mine looks like..
Without EP:install_path D:\Games\Thief\T1
language english
resname_base D:\Games\Thief\T1+D:\Games\Thief\T1\RES+D:\Games\Thief\T1
load_path D:\Games\Thief\T1+D:\Games\Thief\T1
script_module_path D:\Games\Thief\T1+D:\Games\Thief\T1
movie_path D:\Games\Thief\T1\movies+D:\Games\Thief\T1\movies
With EP:install_path D:\Games\Thief\T1
language english
resname_base .\EP\Thief1+.\EP+D:\Games\Thief\T1+D:\Games\Thief\T1\RES+D:\Games\Thief\T1
load_path D:\Games\Thief\T1+D:\Games\Thief\T1
script_module_path D:\Games\Thief\T1+D:\Games\Thief\T1
movie_path D:\Games\Thief\T1\movies+D:\Games\Thief\T1\movies
so I have to ask what is the extra info in your resname - ".\fam+.\mesh+.\motions+.\obj"

The extra info is the fam folder i made for the texture patch and the mesh, motions, and obj are folders for daemonite's model patch. I suppose I could remove that part but the problem persists either way. Whether I use a fresh install or not and optimize afterwards, the game crashes at the menu. Having ddfix installed or not doesn't change anything for this problem and I tried to make my install.cfg look a bit more like yours but the game still crashes at the menu :(.
I tried installing a fresh copy of thief 2 as well and the same problem appears.

I'm assuming noone has any idea what's wrong? Oh well thanks anyway.

I'm trying to install and play ThiefG myself, as well as blend in all the new enhancements. I have had the exact same problems as the OP.
After many reinstalls, I think I've traced the issue to Darkloader. Once I "optimize" the Thief installation, the game crashes once the menu loads.
This happens even on a fresh installation. If I open my install.cfg and edit out the RES entry in the resname_base line, then copy the crfs from RES back into the main directory, it works again. Basically, I'm undoing the optimization. Thief just really doesn't seem to like those files being moved around.
My system is somewhat similar to the OP's:
Intel Core2 Duo
ATI 4670
XP Prof
4 GB RAM
If anyone can give me/us a hint as to how to proceed, I'd appreciate it. Actually, if it's possible to live a happy life without optimizing, I guess that may well solve it. Thoughts?
(WALL OF TEXT REMOVED)
REALLY FINAL EDIT:
Fuck me, it's the
resname_base line in
install.cfg. Everything works now, the OM's, FM's... Haven't tried the extensions yet, but I anticipate similar nonsense with getting those to work.
My final install.cfg, which seems to have solved everything:
Code:
cd_path .\
install_path .\
language english
resname_base .\+E:\Thief\ThiefG\RES+.\RES
load_path .\
script_module_path .\
movie_path .\movies
Just change E:\Thief\ThiefG\RES to your exact install path. For some reason, I also need .\RES in there too.
I don't anticipate having much fun figuring out how EP.crf is going to fit in there without blowing up the entire world, but at least it's functioning for now.
Then I have to make sure Thief 2 works.

I tried what you did and darkloader works just fine now. However, when I run the game without any fms, the game crashes. Thanks though.

Are you using INSTALL ONLY FOR ONE OF THE ORIGINAL THIEF (GOLD TMA).?
If you are closing a FM and not using INSTALL ONLY for one of the originals, that can cause problems.
SpawnRaider on 4/12/2009 at 04:58
I tried both ways in uninstalling a mission. Installing only and pressing 'play' cause the same effect when I try to play original missions. when I remove
the last 'RES' from +G:\ThiefG\RES+.\RES, the original missions work but fan missions don't.
