Everything works, movies, running the game, and it's in a window too! I love that, but
When I try to play the game, it just goes to a black screen and hangs. I notice in Options I can't enable Hardware graphical display. Is there a way to enable it?
I did install Orgy's Thief 2 meshes and Hardware textures, could that be a problem?
Edit: Uninstalled, reinstalled Thief Gold, re-applied DDFix, uninstalled/reinstalled DarkLoader, optimized my install, game still freezes when gameplay starts.

The "cannot find hardware" graphics problem usually means that DDFix installation has failed. Try installing it manually (you'd need to do hex-editing, but it's all described in the Readme that comes with DDFix).
Edit - you could try a complete re-install of Thief Gold and DDFix without Orgy's meshes and textures, that would help eliminate possible causes.

I tried that and it didn't seem to work. I also get a notice when I start up Thief that DirectX6 isn't installed.
Edit: Installed Thief 2 and I just get a black screen. It seems none of Looking Glass' games want to run for me anymore.

OK, this is how I installed DDFix manually, so this should work:
1) Uninstall Thief Gold, and delete the game directory in Windows.
2) Install the latest DirectX from (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3) here. Reboot the computer.
3) Install Thief Gold. Do not install into the Program Files directory, UAC will stop the editing you do having any effect.
4) Play Thief Gold. The game will crash when you start the Training Mission, but it will populate some lines in a config file we need to edit later. Alt-Tab back to Windows, and close Thief Gold.
5) Download DDFix from (
http://timeslip.users.sourceforge.net/ddfix.html) here - get the manual version. Unzip it to your Thief Gold directory.
6) Download PSPad from (
http://www.pspad.com/en/download.php) here, and install it.
7) Make a copy of the Thief.exe file for backup purposes, and then open PSPad. Go to File -> Open in Hex Editor.
8 ) Search (Ctrl+F) for the first occurance of the string "ddraw.dll" (without quotes). Overwrite it with the phrase "ddfix.dll" (withouth quotes), save, and close PSPad.
9) Go to ddfix.ini in your Thief Gold directory, open with a Text Editor (e.g. Wordpad) and make sure the following lines are correct:
gWidth=1280
gHeight=1024
MultiCoreFix=1
VideoFix=1
10) Save and close ddfix.ini.
11) Open the file cam.cfg in your Thief Gold directory, and make sure the following lines are correct:
game_hardware 1
game_screen_size 1280 1024
12) Save and close cam.cfg.
13) Run Thief Gold. It should all now work.
If this doesn't work, then something very strange is going on. What graphics card are you using? Fog isn't working on the latest official ddfix release with the latest graphics cards, but they are working on getting it ironed out.

Followed your direction to the letter, and nothing.
my CAM.CFG doesn't have those notes you mention, and my USER.CFG is just a bunch of numbers.
Brian The Dog on 31/3/2010 at 12:22
The cam.cfg should be this (see Nameless Voice's Stickied Thread in this forum):
Code:
; hey, which game is this
game dark
; general configs
include_user_cfg user.cfg
editor_include_dromed_cfg dromed.cfg
; game specific paths/configs
dark_include_install_cfg darkinst.cfg
shock_include_install_cfg install.cfg
; set trait cache to include concretes
trait_cache_flags 2
no_network
sfx_vol_music -474
fogging 1
enhanced_sky 1
render_weather 1
game_screen_depth 16
sfx_vol_2d 0
sfx_channels 24
vmCenterX 0.5004897118
sfx_vol_3d 0
game_screen_size 1280 1024
vmCenterY 0.5008818507
ambient_volume 0
master_volume -1
game_screen_flags 13
game_full_screen 1
game_hardware 1
sfx_device 2
gamma 1.
d3d_driver_index 0
sfx_eax 1
skip_starting_checks
Try copying & pasting the missing lines into cam.cfg in your Thief 2 directory. If the line "game_screen_size 1280 1024" is missing then it definitely won't work, as Thief's game resolution hasn't been set yet and hence DDFix can't integrate with it properly.

Also I did compatibility mode Windows XP service pack 2 but everything else fixed Thief Gold for me :cheeky:
