Thief Gold Breaking Down (Frequent Freezes)

I have Thief Gold running on a Windows 98 partition. It's worked okay up until recently; it started freezing during "Undercover" whenever I got near the temple gate. I got around that by switching to software rendering, but then it started crashing when I did stuff like loading a game or reading books in the mission. Most recently, following a re-install, I tried starting a new game; the training mission ran fine, but then the game crashed when loading the Bafford equipment screen.

I've never had much trouble with TG up until this point. I had a spot of fairly regular freezing when trying to play Assassins, but it cleared up suddenly and I completed the mission easily.

Any ideas?

Note: I'm using the fan patched .EXE, since the game always locks on loading a mission with the normal one.

My specs:
Windows 98 (4.10, Build 1998) with DirectX 9.0b
AMD Duron 750 MHz
512 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 (Driver 4.14.0010.5664)
SB Live! Sound Card

have you gone thru the recommended tweaks for getting thief to run? the ones in the (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75031) thief faq?

There's little I saw there of use... about the only thing that applied to during-mission crashes is the hyperthreading thing, and I don't have a hyperthreading processor. The problem isn't actually starting the missions and getting the 3D engine to run; it's playing them without it hanging. :(

I haven't had much trouble with missions besides Undercover... so things seem to be narrowed down to data corruption.

<s>Could someone send me a save game in Undercover (or soon before it) so I could test whether things are okay with a different save?</s> Edit: Nevermind, found a savegame collection :)

I've got Thief Gold installed on my lap top with windows 7 installed. It works, but freezes quite frequently and randomly. It does seem to be worse if there is a lot of activity going on in game. Even sounds happening simultaneously seem to trigger it. (Example: while a zombie or guard is making a noise, if I walk or make a sound it will freeze)
I love to play this game so I have been ignoring most of the problems, but it gets frustrating when I have to exit with CTRL+Alt+Del every 5-10 minutes or so.
