Saw this over on the official forums - here's the rating board's description of New Thief, giving us a mini preview of some things that will be in the game:
Quote:
Content Descriptors: Blood, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs, Violence
Rating Summary: This is a first-person shooter in which players assume the role of a thief attempting to defeat a conspiracy. Players sneak around guards and civilians in order to break into various buildings and steal items. Players sometimes use a blackjack to knock guards out. Throughout the game, characters use knives and swords to kill other human enemies. Blood splatter effects occur during battle. Corpses are frequently depicted, sometimes lying in pools of blood. During the course of the game, players can roam through a brothel environment in which several prostitutes are depicted topless. The central character has the ability to spy on couples engaging in sexual activity (topless characters); suggestive moaning and dialogue can also be heard. Some settings depict opium vats or characters under the influence of the drug. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” can be heard in the dialogue.
Not crazy about the R rated stuff from the brothel level. Hopefully it will be contained to just that mission.
Dishonored was able to do a brothel level without getting all graphic, so I don't know why EM felt the need to do so. Guess it's their way of being "edgy."

I know there is a tend for games to be more mature but this is just unnecessary sensationalism.
The only way they can properly get away with it is of the rest of the game is very serious and very mature, and if the nudity fits. I doubt all of that though.

I don't really mind nudity in games (I don't mind nudity at all, in fact), but it seems... odd in Thief. Like Brethren said, Dishonored managed to have a cat house without showing explicit stuff and it was still convincing. That was also something that bothered me in T2X, with Of Ill Repute. Profanity, eh I dunno. Ramirez did use profanity in The Dark Project, but the dialogues and the readables were so well written it was forgotten really fast. Somehow I highly doubt, given the fanfic-level of the writing so far, that the text and dialogues will be as good as TDP's and TMA's.

I really don't care about the "objectionable nature" of the content in any video game. There is objectionable content in the real world, and the more accurately it is depicted without compromise, the more realistic the game world becomes. A game world where nudity or sex cannot exist, where children are indestructible, or where central Africa is 25% hispanic and 10% caucasian, is stupid and unrealistic. And it just shows what is going on in the heads of the developers. Developers who censor nudity are puritanical weirdos who can't handle humanity. Devs who go out of their way to make sure that kids can't be killed, obviously came up with the idea of killing kids when it shouldn't have even occurred to them. And devs who deliberately misrepresent racial demographics of different world regions to avoid accusations of racism are being racists themselves.

And what exactly made you think about (in)destructible children? :p

It's not just about the developers though. The devs themselves might be okay with nudity and whatever, but it's not okay for all the potential customers. There are a lot of people who can't handle humanity. Didn't the gay relationships in Dragon Age cause some kind of a scandal?

There's nothing wrong with explicit sex acts in games, but I think the main problem with it here is it would create a pretty drastic shift in tone. Compared to the previous Thief games. Obviously it's a reboot and they can change whatever they want, but when you take something that never had any fornicating in it, and add graphic sex scenes it looks like you are trying a little too hard to be edgy. It comes off as really hackish to me. In something like The Witcher this sort of thing would make sense, but with Thief it doesn't really fit with the way The City was previously depicted.

Initially? Well, a dragon actually. Or rather, the sole survivors of its attack on a small town.
